Students, teacher charged in Parma bullying case

PARMA — A substitute teacher and five students at a suburban Cleveland high school have been charged after police say a 14-year-old developmentally disabled boy was apparently bullied in a gym class.

Parma police say the boy was knocked down by a volleyball thrown at his head last month at Parma Senior High School.

Police report one student kicked the victim, two slid into him and one dragged him by his feet. Police say teacher Gregg Mellinger continued class with the victim on the floor. Authorities say the boy wasn’t seriously injured.

Mellinger, 49, of North Ridgeville, was charged last week with child endangering, and three students were cited for assault and two for disorderly conduct. Mellinger didn’t immediately return a call Monday.

School officials are investigating and called the conduct unacceptable.
