LORAIN — Confusion initially surrounded the scene of an alleged assault at a gas station Tuesday after police heard gunshots in the parking lot and saw multiple people flee on foot and in cars and two Lorain men were charged in the aftermath.

Aaron Harrison, 20, of Lorain, was charged with carrying a concealed weapon, improper handling of a firearm inside a motor vehicle and receiving stolen property.

Damarcus Harrison, 19, of Lorain, was charged with possession of cocaine and drug paraphernalia.

Police responded to the Sunoco at 2436 Broadway about 2:30 a.m. after they heard gunshots, according to a police report. At the scene, police saw people leaving, according to the report.

Officers saw Mark Cheers, 30, and Anthony Fairley, 36, coming out of the gas station, and both were bleeding from their heads, according to the report.

After questioning Cheers, who denied that there was a fight, police spoke with Fairley, who told officers he was trying to break up a fight at the gas station when Cheers’ girlfriend hit him in the back of his head with a piece of metal shelving, police said.

The girlfriend had left by the time Fairley was questioned, according to the report.

When police spoke with Sunoco employee Nasir Herbawi, he corroborated Fairley’s story and added that during the fight, he saw someone shoot a gun into the air in the parking lot next door.

While some officers questioned witnesses, others searched for the alleged shooter. About 2:30 a.m., shortly after the gunshots, police saw a silver Honda Civic make a quick turn around the intersection of West 23rd Street and Broadway, according to a the report.

Police followed the car, which pulled into a driveway in the 2200 block of Reid Avenue. Officers took the driver, Aaron Harrison, and the two passengers, Alonzo Harrison and Damarcus Harrison, out of the car to question them and search the vehicle.

Under Damarcus Harrison’s seat, police said they found a wadded up $20 bill containing crack cocaine and a Taurus special revolver that was reported stolen in 2011.

Aaron Harrison told police he and the two passengers left a bar earlier in the evening and went to the gas station on Broadway and West 25th Street. He told police that soon after they got there, he heard shots fired and a fight break out, so he quickly left.

The gun belonged to him, he told police, saying, “That’s how I roll,” according to the police report.

Both Alonzo and Damarcus Harrison corroborated Aaron Harrison’s story and said they knew nothing about the drugs in the car, according to the report.

Police tested all three men for gunshot residue and are waiting to receive the results to see if there’s evidence that one of the men fired a gun.

Police said they believe the Harrisons are relatives, but their relationship was not clear.

Aaron and Damarcus Harrison were being held on $5,000 bond Wednesday at the Lorain City Jail. Their court date is set for 9 a.m. Wednesday at Lorain Municipal Court.
