According to Avon Lake police, the department assisted the Avon Lake dog warden in response to a complaint of two dogs running at large.
Officers found the two pit bull-mix dogs on Williamsburg Drive.
“While on scene, it was learned that another resident was bit twice on the leg and was seeking medical treatment at the hospital,” the report stated. The gender or age of the victim was not released.
Officers then learned the two dogs ran up to a golden retriever in a driveway and attacked it without provocation.
“The officer was not able to stop the attack and attempted to put down both attacking dogs. One dog (the pit mix) died at the scene,” the report stated.
According to police, the other wounded pit bull mix fled. Officers were able to track the dog, capture it and transport it to the Avon Lake Animal Clinic for treatment.
Both dogs had cloth collars with no dog tags. The owner has not been located.
The male pit bull was a dark brindle, possibly pure breed, weighing about 45 pounds. The female blue pit bull with possible cane corso weighed about 50 pounds, had recently given birth and had recently been nursing.
The dispatcher was not allowed to comment on which dog died at the scene.
Due to the resident’s injuries, the owner is being sought to determine the shot records for the dogs in order to forgo rabies treatment.
The incident remains under investigation.
