Boys basketball: Four area players named to All-Ohio teams

Westlake senior Gavin Skelly was named to the Division I third team to lead four area players who earned spots on the The Associated Press Division I and II All-Ohio boys basketball teams which were released Monday.

Vermilion’s Cameron Kuhn was picked Special Mention in Division II, while Elyria’s Isaiah Walton and Clearview’s Gerrell Williams were Honorable Mention in Divisions I and II, respectively.

A 6-foot-9 power forward and Northwestern recruit, Skelly averaged 18.4 points per game to help lead the Demons to the Division I district semifinals where they lost to Brunswick.

Kuhn highlighted his senior season by becoming the Sailors’ all-time scoring leader, finishing his career with 1,451 points. The D-II All-Lorain County Player of the Year averaged 22.1 points, 5.6 rebounds and 3.2 assists this season.

Walton, the All-Lorain County D-I Player of the Year, averaged 21.86 points, 5.8 rebounds and 4.55 assists a game for Elyria this season, going over 1,000 points for his career.

Williams also went over 1,000 career points this season, finishing with 1,015. The three-year letterwinner averaged 20.1 points and 8.0 rebounds a game for the Clippers as a senior.

Gahanna Lincoln’s Javon Bess and Shaker Hts.’ Esa Ahmad shared D-I All-Ohio Player of the Year awards, while Leo Barber of Berea-Midpark was Coach of the Year along with Upper Arlington’s Tim Casey and Toledo Bowsher’s Joe Guerrero.

In D-II, Dakota Mathias of Elida and Luke Kennard of Franklin were co-Players of the Year.

Buckeye’s Matt Saunders was one of five to earn D-II Coach of the Year. He was joined by Whitehall-Yearling’s Drew Williams, Chagrin Falls’ Dave Barger, Manfield Ontario’s Joe Balogh and Shawn O’Connell of Dayton Ponitz Career Technology Center.

Divisions III and IV will be released today.
