AVON LAKE — Keystone’s Darcy Irish scored eight points and grabbed 10 rebounds while three of her teammates scored eight points each as the Black Team rallied from a 10-point halftime deficit to knock off the Gold Team 48-45 Wednesday in one of the Lorain County girls senior all-star basketball games at Avon Lake High School.

Irish scored all her points in the second half. Her first bucket of the game, a layup on a feed from Lorain’s Destiny Wilson, started a 6-0 run that cut the Gold Team’s lead from 28-20 to 28-26. Later in the half, Midview’s Molly Linn scored six straight points. Her bucket, again off a feed from Wilson, at the 7:17 mark of the second half gave the Black Team a 36-35 lead.

It would not trail again.

Wilson finished with six points and six assists while Vermilion’s Hannah Bartlome and Amherst’s Mallory Sliman added eight points each.

“It was so much fun out there,” Irish said. “Our team messed around a bit in practice, but we took it seriously. Everyone played really hard and we had a great time.”

Brookside’s Erika Elias led the Gold Team with a game-high 10 points while North Ridgeville’s Isabella Pecchia added nine points and five blocked shots.

“We really wanted to have fun, to give everyone a chance to score,” Pecchia said. “It was exciting, having one last chance to play with each other. It’s literally the last time we get to see each other. Everyone is going to go their separate ways after this, and it’s a nice way to say goodbye to everyone.”

Keystone’s Jillian Peters agreed.

“It was fun to have one last hurrah … to have one last chance to play again with these girls,” she said. “I grew up playing against them, all through grade school and high school. It was nice to get the chance to play together one last time.”

Peters liked how her team, coached by Vermilion’s Colin Irish and Keystone’s Scott Terry, came together quickly.

“We had two practices, the first one at Vermilion and the second one at Keystone,” Peters said. “We shot around, played five-on-five and had a good time. We got to know each other a lot better and became a team.”

Darcy Irish thought the team’s closeness and attitude was the reason it was able to overcome a 10-point deficit.

“I think we were able to come back because we were having so much fun,” she said. “No one was really dead-serious, but we were able to push ourselves until the end.”

In the first game, Lake Ridge’s Selena Benz scored 14 points while Amherst’s Sydney Click had a game-high 18 in a losing effort as the Orange Team defeated the Blue Team 52-32.
