Carl J. Smitkowski, 84, of Elyria, passed away Monday, March 17, 2014, in Lorain, after a short illness. He was born January 12, 1930, in Elyria.
He worked as a welder for U.S. Steel for many years. He was a member of Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church in South Amherst, Polish Club of Elyria, and a golf league. Carl enjoyed playing golf, building quality homes and was an animal lover. He especially enjoyed attending his grandchildren sporting events.
He is survived by his daughter-in-law, Cheryl L. Smitkowski of Amherst; grandchildren, Melissa, Heather, Carly, Gregory, Wendy; and great-grandchildren, Dmitry, Brady, Gavin, Luxy and Ivy.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Smitkowski; son, Mark R. Smitkowski; parents, Walter and Nellie Smitkowski; brother, Al Smitkowski; and sister, Mary McDermott.
There will be a Memorial Mass at Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, 333 South Lake St., in South Amherst, Friday March 28, 2014, at 11 A.M., followed by a burial of Carl’s cremains in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Elyria. A luncheon will follow, in the Church, after the burial.
