Taru Lamar Smith, Sr., born August 21, 1977, in Lorain, died unexpectedly Tuesday, March 18, 2014. Taru was a lifetime Lorain resident and attended Lorain High School. He continued in Job Corp where he received his diploma in May 1995. He later attended Barber School in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
Taru was a talented ballplayer, whether baseball, basketball or football; he played them all well. He loved spending time with his family and friends, enjoyed cutting hair and was known for his quick quips that kept everyone laughing.
Fond memories of Taru will be cherished by his fiancee, Kristy Dillard; two sons, Taru Lamar Smith, Jr. and Promise Hairston, both of Lorain, his mother, Remond “Money” Thomas; and father Vincent Smith, both of Lorain; stepfather Samuel Matthews; his sisters, Talona Sharae Thomas, Tyisha Smith, Shavasia Matthews all of Lorain; twin sisters, Aliya and Alexis Rednour of Oberlin; stepsister, Toya Matthews; stepbrother, Raji Matthews; grandmother, Estella R. Smith, whom he always called “GiGi”; his one niece; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
Taru was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, James Ella Thomas; and paternal grandfather, Sherman Smith.
Visitation will be held Monday, March 24, 2014, from 10 A.M., until the time of service at 12 P.M., at Friendship Baptist Church, 2160 Reeves Ave., Lorain, with Reverend John R. Jackson, Pastor, officiating. Interment will be at Ridge Memorial Park Amherst.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to any First Federal Savings Bank, in the name of Taru Lamar Smith, Jr. for his college fund.
