Update (12:30 p.m.:) ELYRIA – A man suspected of robbing Dollar Bank on West River Road North was apprehended nearby less than an hour later.
Elyria police Capt. Chris Costantino detained the suspect behind PNC Bank on Midway Mall Boulevard after police received a report of a suspicious man near the wooded area behind the bank.
The man, who was not yet been identified publicly by police, was arrested after he was positively identified by employees of the bank as the suspected robber. Costantino said the man had a substantial amount of cash.
Police are investigating whether the man may have been connected to a robbery at Talmer Bank and Trust on Wednesday.
Costantino said a similar type of note was used in both robberies.
The suspect in the robbery at Talmer Bank was described as an unshaven white man in his late 40s or early 50s. A passer-by told police the man got into a white Nissan Maxima parked on Antioch and drove away alone, heading west.
Officers found items believed to be related to the robbery, including a jacket, along North Abbe Road.
Today, police found a hooded jacket behind Burger King, believed to belong to the bank robber.
Costantino applauded the quick work of the Elyria Police Department and Lorain County Sheriff’s Office in today’s robbery.
“They guys did a great job,” he said.
Update (12 p.m.:) A suspect in the Dollar Bank robbery was taken into custody behind PNC Bank shortly before noon.
Police said the suspect was spotted at 49th Street and Moran Avenue, and he was positively identified at the scene. Police said he had a substantial amount of money on him.
The suspect was transported to the Elyria Police Department.
More information will be released later this afternoon.
Elyria Police are responding to a bank robbery at the Dollar Bank, 1500 West River Road North.
The robbery was reported at about 11:15 a.m.
