Alfred E. Verhoff passed away Saturday, March 22, 2013. Mr. Verhoff resided in Lake Wales, Florida, where he retired after 36 years as Foreman at United States Steel in Lorain. Born December 14, 1929 in Marywood, Ohio, Mr. Verhoff spent most of his life in Elyria with his wife Elizabeth (Betty Davis) with whom he was married for 64 years (July 30, 1949).
Alfred spent many years volunteering at St. Jude’s Parish and School and Elyria Catholic. He and his brother Wilfred (Bud) designed and built the first Media Center at EC along with a retractable window treatment for the auditorium. When not volunteering at St. Jude’s Parish or EC, Alfred and his brother spent many hours together building additions on to the homes of family members. When they weren’t building together, they were the unofficial jokesters in the family. He was a T-Ball coach and built the T-Ball Stands for the Elyria League. An avid outdoorsman, he was Assistant Boy Scout Leader for St. Jude’s Troop 133.
Verhoff leaves five children behind, Nancy of Alliance, Ohio Alfred Richard (Pam) of Vermilion, Marilyn Wagner (Don) of Chagrin Falls), Renee of Elyria and Gary (Barb) of Elyria; additionally he leaves 10 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren behind.
He was preceded in death by his son, Dennis James; and his siblings, Louise DeJohn, William, Marcella Cornell, Helen Donovan, Armella Ross, Wilfred and Benedict.
Friends will be received at the Reichlin Roberts Funeral Home, 327 Cleveland Street, Elyria, Thursday, March 27, 2014 from 5 to 9 P.M. Closing prayers will be in the funeral home Friday, March 28, 2014 at 9:30 A.M. followed by Mass at St. Jude Church, 590 Poplar Street, Elyria, at 10 A.M. Burial will immediately follow at St. Mary Cemetery, Elyria.
