Lorain man indicted on charges he moved body of shooting victim

Adam Ortiz Jr.

ELYRIA — A Lorain man has been indicted on charges that he moved the body of shooting victim DeAndre McDowell last May.

Adam Ortiz Jr., 19, is charged with tampering with evidence, obstructing justice, possession of criminal tools and abuse of a corpse.

McDowell, 17, was shot in the head at a Lorain home before his body was moved to a wooded lot on Lexington Avenue, where it was discovered by a man and woman driving by and watching a group of wild turkeys.

Meanwhile, Antonio Robles, 20, is facing murder, felonious assault, reckless homicide and tampering with evidence charges in the shooting.

Investigators initially believed the shooting was accidental, but Lorain County Prosecutor Dennis Will said additional information led to the murder charge, which was filed last month.

Will said other charges could be filed in the case, but would not elaborate.

“There were other things that came up and were verified,” he said.

Will said Ortiz is accused of moving other items in addition to McDowell’s body, but he declined to specify what else was relocated.

Prosecutors also are trying to seize a Ford Explorer. Ortiz’s attorney, Kenneth Ortner, said his understanding is that his client allegedly used the vehicle to move the body.

“The body was somehow moved from point A to point B and they’re saying my client did it,” he said.

Ortner also said that despite the charges against Robles, Ortiz has maintained that the shooting was accidental.

He said others who were at the Lorain home where the shooting took place have said it was done on purpose.

“At least one other person said it was murder,” Ortner said.

Following the shooting, Robles fled the state, but was arrested a few days later after contacting Lorain police and making arrangements to surrender to police in Charlotte, N.C.

Jack Bradley, Robles’ attorney, declined to comment Monday.
