AVON LAKE — Weather conditions were more than challenging but they didn’t prevent the Avon girls track team from taking first in the 800-meter relay at Saturday’s 18th annual Avon Lake Invitational.

Regan Betts, Sierra Greer, Emily Joyce and Hailey Acosta turned in a time of 1:53.49 to surge by Strongsville (1:53.86) and Brunswick (1:53.91) in the final two legs for the victory.

“It feels great,” Greer said. “The timing for our handoffs was good, especially for early in the season. We weren’t expecting a win at all. We were the No. 3 seed in the race so we really didn’t think we had a chance. The wind was brutal. When you came into the turn it really smacked you in the face.”

Joyce added a third in the 400 (1:03.14) with Betts taking eighth.

“We were predicted to get third but we went into the race telling each other that we were capable of doing it,” Betts said. “I’m so happy that we all ran so very well.

“It was exciting to watch the race unfold. Sierra took the baton in fourth on the second leg and she really moved us up. It’s exciting. Today really gives us a lot of motivation and confidence. I’m looking forward to competing against even better competition.”

Avon Lake senior Max Seipel was second in the discus (164-4) to Medina senior Mike Hierlozer (165-11). Seipel also took third in the shot put (55-0) behind Mentor’s John Maurins (64-6½) and Hierlozer (56-3 ½). Maurins broke the 2002 meet record of 64-6 held by Avon Lake’s Mike D’Andrea.

“Mike got some revenge on me today in discus,” Seipel said. “I threw a PR (personal record, 171) in a dual meet on Wednesday at Medina. Mike through 170. It’s always very close between us.

“My legs are really tired today from training heavy. Everything else was pretty good. This cold weather has a little factor in it so I’m excited when the weather gets very nice. I’m content with how I threw today.”

Avon Lake senior Dave Winkel was second in the 300 hurdles (40.72) and teamed with James Darkow, Kyle Beck, Ian Korney (3:33.95) to finish second in the 1,600 relay, right behind Mentor (3:32.98).

In a battle of state pole vault qualifiers, Medina’s Kyle Hutchison (13-0) defeated Elyria Catholic’s Lucas Ball, who tied Westlake’s Mike Sedlak for second at 12-0.

“The winds forced me to use a short approach today,” Ball said. “It wasn’t ideal conditions, but I’ve had a lot of practice with the short approach over the winter months.’

The Avon Lake boys led area teams with a sixth-place finish out of 15 teams with 58½ points. Avon led area girls with a ninth-place finish (34).
