Thomas Joseph George, Sr.

OBIT FLAGThomas Joseph George, Sr., 86, of Amherst, passed away Saturday, April 5, 2014, at New Life Hospice Residence Center, following a brief illness.

A lifetime resident of Amherst, Tom was born May 23, 1927. He graduated from John Carroll University with a Bachelor of Science degree. He owned and operated George’s Tax Service since 1972. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army as a Sergeant First Class.

He was a lifetime member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and had attended the Band of Brothers Retreat and continued to maintain the bonds that he formed with these men. He was a member of the Amherst Rotary Club, the American Legion, and VFW. In his spare time, he enjoyed golfing. By far his favorite past time was spent with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, with whom he had a special rapport.

Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Margaret George (nee Alexander); his son, Thomas Joseph George, Jr. of New Mexico; his stepson, William (Debbie) King of Maryland; his daughters, Linda Henderson of Amherst, Barbara (Michael) Orgish of Pennsylvania, Anita (Paul) Meldau of Florida; 14 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and his sisters, Rosemary Goodwin of Amherst; and Kathleen Barnhart of California.

Tom was preceded in death by his brothers, David and Salem “Sal” George; his sisters, Ellie Akers and Minnie Shand; and his parents, Salem and Sadie George (nee Kamalay).

The family will receive friends Tuesday, April 8, 2014, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 200 St. Joseph Dr., Amherst, from 2 until 4 and 7 until 9 P.M. A Mass of Christian burial will be held Wednesday, April 9, 2014, at 10:30 A.M., at the church. The Reverend Father Lawrence Martello, Pastor, will be the Celebrant. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Amherst. Military honors will be provided by the Amherst Veterans Military Honor Guard.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
