Police say man caned woman after he discovered missing salad

ELYRIA — A woman was hospitalized Saturday after police said her roommate beat her with a cane, possibly over a missing salad dinner.

Michael Harris, 42, was charged with felonious assault Saturday morning at the house he shares with Wendy Fischer in the 200 block of H Street. Fischer was treated for her injuries and released.

About 9:45 a.m. Saturday, Fischer arrived at University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center shortly before she was flown to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland.

Fischer had injuries on her neck and back from an assault, said Elyria police Capt. Chris Costantino.

Costantino said the assault began earlier that morning when Fischer was asleep. Fischer told police shortly after she went to sleep at 1 a.m., Harris came home.

Harris woke up Fischer and started yelling at her, possibly because she ate a salad he was saving, Costantino said.

During the fight, Harris grabbed a cane and started hitting Fischer around the neck and back. Fischer was able to make her way to the phone and call police, Costantino said.

Harris was being held Tuesday at Lorain County Jail on a $250,000 bond. His court date is 1 p.m. Monday in Elyria Municipal Court.
