Norman “Smokey” Stover, 67, of Amherst, passed away Tuesday, April 15, 2014 at New Life Hospice Residential Center in Lorain, following a brief illness. He was born September 25, 1946 in Washington, D.C. Norman was raised in Washington D.C., graduating from St. Anthony’s High School. He had made his home in Amherst since 1972.
Norman started his career with the Amherst Police Department and continued serving with the Vermilion Police Department for thirty years. He also served with the Amherst Fire Department, retiring after 30 years as the Assistant Chief. He also enjoyed working in sales. Norman will be remembered for his quick whit, charm and his desire to help others, as well as being an avid Washington Redskins fan.
He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife of 46 years, Janet Stover (nee Franklin); his son and his wife, Michael and Audrey Stover of Lorain; his daughter and her husband, Pamela and Tim Gates of Amherst; grandchildren, Taylor Stover, Madelyne and Wyatt Gates; and his sister, Jacqueline Teel of Winter Park, Florida.
He was preceded in death by his father, Percy H. Stover in 1984.
Friends may call Friday, April 18, 2014 from 4 until the time of the Memorial Service at 7 P.M. at the Hempel Funeral Home, 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. The Rev. Fr. Michael Denk, Associate Pastor of St. Joseph Catholic Church, will officiate.
