Thomas Allen White, Sr., 97, of Elyria, passed away peacefully in the University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center, Monday, April 14, 2014, following a short illness. He was born in Barbourville, Kentucky, becoming a resident of Elyria in 1954.
Mr. White graduated from Barbourville High School, where he played football. After graduating, he enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War II, where he served as a medic in North Africa and the South Pacific.
He was employed at Ridge Tool, Inc. in the maintenance department, retiring in 1983. He also was one of the first African American’s to own and operate Tom White Cleaners of Elyria. Mr. White was a member of Second Baptist Church of Elyria, where he served as a Church Deacon, and sang in the men’s choir and the senior choir.
He enjoyed gardening and spending time with family and friends.
He will be sadly missed by his wife of 66 years, Katheryn White; daughter, Shelia T. Farmer of California; son, Thomas Allen White, II of Elyria; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and host of nieces, nephews and other relatives
He was preceded in death by his parents, Crit and Kathrine White; and six brothers.
Friends may call Monday, April 21, 2014, at the Second Baptist Church, 427 Chapman Lane, Elyria, from 11 A.M., until the time of service at 12 Noon, with Reverend Dr, Carl P. Small officiating. Burial will be in Brookdale Cemetery, with VFW Post #1079 performing full military honors.
