Elyria man reports assault, robbery by two unknown men

ELYRIA – An Elyria man who thought he was being followed early Wednesday morning had his fears confirmed when two men approached him from behind, punched him in the head and stole his phone.

Connor Murphy, 20, was walking northbound on the 300 block of Furnace Street at about 2 a.m. when he heard something behind him, according to Elyria Police Capt. Chris Costantino. Murphy turned around to see a younger black man wearing a long-sleeved white shirt and an older black man with dark clothes and a grey beard. Both men were walking behind Murphy and “gaining on him,” Costantino said.

Murphy continued walking forward and when he turned around again, the younger man punched him in the face, Costantino said. Murphy told police he fell to the ground and quickly lost consciousness. When he came-to, he saw the two men standing over him. The younger man was holding Murphy’s phone and the older man was holding a knife and threatening to stab Murphy, according to police.

However, the man didn’t follow up on his threat, and the two suspects left the scene, heading southbound toward Lake Avenue, Costantino said.

Anyone who has more information on the assault and robbery can call Elyria Police at 323-3302.

Why in the world are you out walking the streets of Elyria at 2 a.m. unless you’re up to no good……

    • Bob

Why would you live in Elyria these days. You take you life in you own hand every time you walk out your door no matter what time of the day.

      • Barbara Radke

I’m proud to live in Elyria and proud to say I walk the streets without fear and enjoy the wonderful people of our town. Don’t know where you live, but I like it here. I’m sure you have bad apples in your town too.

        • Sis Delish

Silly question, but when filling out forms, do you check the box labeled ‘white’ when you select your race?

          • Sis Delish

Fake Sis Delish Poster made the following Post:

“Silly question, but when filling out forms, do you check the box labeled ‘white’ when you select your race?”

        • Bob

Sure. I am sure you walk the streets during the day. How about you come talk to me when you walk the streets after dark like this man was doing.

BTW I live in southern Lorain county. Far away for your crime ridden town. I live were I can let me kids play outside and not have to worry about some dirt bag pulling up and trying to kidnap them. You know like what happen about four times the school year in Elyria. I live where I can sit outside at night and not have to listen to some bass thumping car passing by full of punk who are probably up to no good.

But hey make sure you stay away from the guy infecting everyone with TB too.

          • Kelvin Gray

But yet you open your mouth and offer up your helpful opinion so eloquently. All about a city that you don’t even reside in. Perfect.

      • SniperFire

The mayor promises lots of free stuff if you just stay.

    • Barbara Radke

Could be a number of reasons, maybe playing a game at a friends and walked home. Maybe stopped by to see a sick relative, maybe thought it was a nice night an wanted to take a stroll.

      • unclewicked

“Maybe stopped by to see a sick relative…”

        That’s it precisely… I was… umm… VISITING a sick relative!

        #mystoryandImstickingtoit

    • Tim Francis

Not safe to be out anywhere walking at 2am

    • John Davidson

Why would you walk in Elyria at any time?

  • Lord Anoobis

Two black guys robbed someone!!?? No way!! This is newsworthy.

See, this goes to show ya that there’s truth in the joke: what’s the difference between Batman and a black man?

Batman can go out at night without Robin

    • Barbara Radke

That is disgusting and should be removed as a racist comment.

      • unclewicked

Normally your outrage would be valid, but come on now, 7 ^ votes!

        #thepeoplehavespoken

        • Otter

7^’s do not make it less racist….just lets us know how many, and who the racists are.

          • unclewicked

OK, now I’m just as confused as you are.

            #i’llnevertalk

      • Thankful Former Elyrian

Truth hurts, doesn’t it Barb?? Not racist, simple fact

    • Thankful Former Elyrian

OMG, fell on the floor laughing at this one.

I think Barbara Radke’s REAL name must be Helen Keller

  • Sis Delish

This is the prime reason why Elyria will never see a Food Truck after Dark.

    • unclewicked

Not one that isn’t up on blocks with the wheels missing.

    • Tim Francis

No its because elyria is not a profitable area unless everything is sold for 50 cents whether tje person buying is black or white no money in elyria.

  • unclewicked

What do these morons expect to haul in right after the bars close?

Slim pickin’s when you’re robbing people who’re probably headed home with empty pockets, save the cell phone and some maxed out credit cards.

They can make more money collecting empty cans, as long as they don’t do it in packs of 3 or 4 like their robberies. One to bend over to pick up the can, one to put it in the bag, one to hold the bag and one to keep the crack pipe warm.

    #foolproofplanning

    • Otter

Yet another racist remark, from #.

      • unclewicked

        I mentioned nothing about race.

Well… not in this particular post anyway.

      • Bob

Where in the comment does he mention any race?? I have read it three times to make sure I didn’t miss it. But I see no mention of any race. So please tell us how his statement is racist.

        • Otter

Who do you think it is referring to? Then read it’s reply.

          • Bob

The funny thing is. It mentions nothing about a race of people. But you thinking that it is talking about a race of people makes you the racist not UncleWicked.

          • Otter

Really? Don’t try to deflect this on me. I only had to read it once, and I notice the person who made the remark is not trying to defend it, but you are? Interesting. don’t bother to reply, I am done.

          • Bob

You are the one who said it was racist. So apparently you prejudged what was said to a certain group of people.

And he did say in his reply that he didn’t mention anything about race. YOU DID though.

  • Nanette Bennington Hartman

Crazy thought….. I at one time didnt have a car. I at one time or anither had to walk home from the mall area past cascade and over by the foundry. Most restaurants close at 11-12. Then you have clean up time possibly another hour. And the walk from the mall to the foundry is about a 40 minute walk. I have rode my bike late at nights…. well early mornings 4a.m. and was just cuz I couldnt sleep and took off on a ride. And im squeeky clean. No drugs no alcohol. Just saying.

  • Nanette Bennington Hartman

Uhm he lives across the street from shopway. Isnt that furnace street there? I know him thru my boys. Remember the murphy boy that fell in the falls in 2008? (Not sure on yr) well his brother. This is a good family. And he is a good kid. Maybe walking home from work ir a friends house a few houses down.

    • guest

I live across the street from shopway and its not a choice.its all we can afford, the neighborhood is not safe, the people around us are not good.there is no one good and for those making racists comments on here should be really ashamed..so cuz the men are black in these stories make all black people bad? get real and for the man on here saying Elyria scum and most people do not choose to live here.we cant afford to move or trust me we would.

      • Bob

Can’t afford to move?? Where I live the rent is $300.00 cheaper then any place I lived in Elyria. You need to look outside the city limits. Just saying.

        • golfingirl

Maybe so, but think of all the gas some will have to use to drive back into Elyria for their drugs.

Also, I think many are hanging around until after the July 4 Fireworks show. Starting on July 5, there will be a mass exodus.

    • guest

and no this is Kaiser court, furnace is directly across the street from us where shopway is

      • Nanette Bennington Hartman

Yes I know furnace is the street or corner shopway is on that goes to marathon. He lives on furnace.

      • Nanette Bennington Hartman

And yes again as you. He lives there not by choice but affordability. Race is nit the issue. The two guys were black. Ok. I lived in a less desirable neighborhood and white trash robbed me. Broke in my house and stole a couple hundred dollars. y paycheck for my bills. White. So its not a race thing but an ignorance thing. Js.

        • Nanette Bennington Hartman

And e.pd questioned y I had money in my desk and not in the bank. Would have but didnt make enough to put in bank. As soon as I got it. It was gone to bills. I was appaled that I was told I couldnt keep money in my own house. And now there are people criticizing this kid for walking on the street he lives, got robbed, without even knowing y. How many people have to walk places? Crazy thought.

  • Don Grantzki

I thought chimps used clubs when attacking their victims.

    • Godfather

      filthy apes!

      • golfingirl

Seems I too now have an impostor.

My impostor has added a second “L” to my screen name golfingirl.

This is such an old, elementary trick; cut and paste a photo and change the name ever so slightly in an effort to fool others into believing he is me.

As they say, imitation is the greatest form of flattery. Agrees with me so often, he simply decided to take my name, and even my picture.

        Thank you for the compliment

  • Scout

This robbery had nothing to do with race. It had everything to do with opportunity. It could have happened at anytime. However, one makes oneself more vulnerable at 2 a.m. in the morning when people are not out and about watching. The description of the assailants might be helpful if people in the neighborhood see them. Generic descriptions help no one.

    • SniperFire

‘This robbery had nothing to do with race.’

Sounds like you have information you should be sharing with the police.

  • bdid.d

Love these feel good stories from Elyria!

    • Bob

Thanks. Now I have to clean all the soda off my computer monitor. I laugh so hard it came out my nose. LOL

  • JustaTech

Cell phones have serial and SIM numbers. Tracking stolen phones should be easy for the carriers, but they make billions selling them new ones. Phones should be able to be reported stolen and then rendered useless, or tracked back so the thief can be arrested for theft. Many phones are worth $500 or more, making it felony theft.

    • Wheresmypocketprotector

SiM is the config settings on a phone and is useless. However, International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) is the 15 digit number unique to your phone. Moreover, Lookout app is a great way to recover your phone, as it shows a Google map in real time of where your phone is, and very accurate to a few feet. Even if the battery is dead.
