A fire was reported at about 12:35 p.m. on Gifford Road just north of Route 20.

The Camden Township Fire Department arrived on the scene to find an outbuilding on the property fully engulfed.

They also heard what sounded like gunshots and saw a man with red on his face near the nearby house, according to Lorain County Deputy Sheriff John Steenstra said. Firefighters were concerned about approaching the fire and nearby house, and called the Sheriff’s Department, Steenstra said.

Steenstra said deputies set up a perimeter and called for a negotiator. After talking with an individual inside the house for about 20 minutes, a man emerged from the house armed with a large knife, Steenstra said.

The man approached deputies while talking and gesturing with the knife. After about five minutes, the man knelt down and the knife went partially into the ground. At this point, deputies used a Taser to subdue the man, and he was taken into custody.

Firefighters waited until the man was in custody to approach the fire, which is now under control.

A structure fire was reported at about 12:35 p.m. on Gifford Road just north of Route 20. Crews arrived at the scene to find an outbuilding on the property fully engulfed.

Chronicle-Telegram Chief Photographer Bruce Bishop, who arrived on scene at about 1 p.m., said sheriff’s deputies were initially trying to determine if anyone was inside a house located across the driveway from the outbuilding.

Bishop said a man came out of the house and approached deputies armed with what appeared to be a large butcher knife. Bishop said the man walked toward deputies while gesturing and talking, before backing up toward the burning structure. Armed deputies approached the man and shot him with a Taser, which knocked the man to the ground. Deputies handcuffed him and took him into custody.

The structure fire continued to burn as of 1:30 p.m.
