Sonny Sykes, 28, of Garfield Heights, was charged with assaulting a police officer Tuesday after an incident April 11, a police report said.
About 6:15 p.m., police arrived at Erieview Motel, 2800 W. Erie Ave., for a man lying on the ground outside. Police found Sykes suffering from a seizure in the parking lot. They called for paramedics, who drove him to Mercy Regional Medical Center.
Thirty minutes later, Sykes broke away from his restraints and flailed his arms, almost hitting a paramedic, according to the report. The paramedic hit Sykes in the face with a computer before running out of the ambulance, leaving him inside, police said.
Police got into the ambulance to handcuff Sykes but he fought back, punching one of the officers in the face.
At the hospital, doctors determined that Sykes was on bath salts during the incident, according to the report. Bath salts refers to a type of drug involving one or more synthetic chemicals related to the stimulant cathinone, according to drugabuse.gov.
