James “Jim” Arthur Seaman

OBIT FLAGSeaman_JamesJames “Jim” Arthur Seaman of Elyria, quietly and peacefully entered his eternal home Monday, April 14, 2014. Although 92 years old, Jim had a bright sparkle in his eye and the spunkiness of one much younger. Jim was born February 13, 1922 to proud parents, Henry and Mary (Farr) Seaman. He grew up in Bellevue, Ohio, graduating from York High School in 1940.

With war underway, Jim enlisted in the United States Navy, entering active duty on September 24, 1942. He traveled to the South Pacific aboard the ship, “President Polk” destined for the Gilbert Islands, where he served as a radioman at Tarawa and Makin Islands. He was honorably discharged in December 1945. Up until his death, Jim maintained a wonderful friendship with Sandy Goodrick, a fellow sailor who had served alongside him in the South Pacific during World War II.

At a New Year’s Eve party on December 31, 1945, the day he arrived home from the Navy, Jim met a beautiful young girl who would become the love of his life. Jim married Martha Jane Fox in August 1947. They had been married 63 years at the time of Martha’s death in 2011.

Upon return from military service, Jim resumed his education. He attended Ohio Wesleyan University where he was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity later transferring to Tiffin University, where in 1949 he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce with a focus in Accounting and Business Administration. He spent his 31-year career in corporate, academia and hospital administration/finance. He retired in 1986.

Jim was an avid Lake Erie fisherman. He spent many years restoring the Beatty House on Kelleys Island that he and Martha had purchased in 1961. After retirement, they welcomed many guests into this lovely home which had been converted to a bed and breakfast. He also enjoyed time with his family, reading, music, shuffleboard and the outdoors.

Jim was preceded in death by his beloved wife; his parents; and his sister, Marian (Seaman) Hoffman.

He is survived by his loving sons, James G. Seaman (Penelope) of Elyria and David L. Seaman (Candace) of Clyde, Ohio; treasured granddaughters, Jennifer L. Seaman of Mill Valley, California, Jaime L. Buxton (Sean) of Garfield Heights and Laura M. Belisle (Simon) of Chicago, Illinois; as well as three great-grandsons, Micah S. Buxton, Judah J. Buxton and Asher W. Buxton.

A celebration of Jim’s life will be held Friday, May 9, 2014 at 3:30 P.M. in the Chapel of the Wesleyan Village, 807 West Avenue, Elyria. The Rev. Beth McKee will officiate.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Wesleyan Senior Living Foundation of Elyria, where Jim and Martha had both been cared for so compassionately and lovingly in the final phase of their lives or to the Kelleys Island Historical Society.
