SHEFFIELD — The Vermilion girls track team is used to taking home championships. The boys team usually fares well, just not as well.

Friday was a different story, however, and a big day for the Sailors track program as a whole.

The Sailor girls outscored the six-team field at the third annual Brookside Track and Field Invitational with 144 points, while the boys scored 121 to also get a win.

“I’m ecstatic about our performance tonight,” Vermilion boys coach Dave Domonkos said. “I’m like a proud papa right now. This is one of the biggest teams we’ve ever had and they’ve come together quite nicely as a family. They work hard together, they play together, they go out afterward together. It’s one of those things where they are a tight-knit group.

“They came in (to Friday) with goals and they set a lot of goals tonight. They’re heading in the right direction with a strong first half of the year, and hopefully that transpires into something good at the end of the year.”

Vermilion girls coach Kristy Edmison was happy with her team’s performance, but seemed more thrilled for the boys.

“I’m actually really excited for our boys,” she said. “Our girls have had good years over the past couple of years, while our boys have been improving each and every year. Coach Domonkos has done an amazing job building that program back to where it’s at.”

Junior Brandon Cole was the lone multiple individual winner for the Sailors. He set the meet record in the 110 hurdles with a time of 16.8 seconds and then won the 300 hurdles in 43.6 seconds. He also helped the 800 relay team win with a time of 1:36.5 and finished third in the 200 dash.

“Today was really competitive,” Cole said. “I was really excited when I found out I broke the record. I’ve never set a meet record before anywhere, so that was really cool. I probably could have done better in the 200 but I just come off the 300 hurdles and I wasn’t fully energized.”

Sophomore Kole Johnson capped a string of four straight events won by Vermilion runners when he edged Clearview’s Patrick O’Connor for the win in the 200 dash. Johnson finished with a time of 24.2 seconds.

“My problem has been getting off to slow starts,” said Johnson, who also ran on the winning 1,600 and 800 relay teams. “Today, especially in the 200, I got off to a great start and I think that’s what got me the win.”

Other winners for the Sailors included Zach Myracle (800 run, 3,200 relay) and Ian Hoering (400 dash, 1,600 and 800 relays).

“I thought Johnson had a great day, as well as Brandon Cole,” Domonkos said. “Seth Konrad, our senior team leader, also had an outstanding day. He ran hurdles for the first time ever last week and winds up finishing second in the 300, so that was just phenomenal.”

In the girls meet, senior Hannah Bartlome showed that the sprained ankle she suffered during basketball season has healed up nicely, winning the high jump, long jump and 400 dash, and finishing second to Brookside junior Tyller Holley in a competitive 200.

“It started off by me jumping a season-best 16-9 in the long jump, which is pretty good considering my first long jump meet was last Saturday,” Bartlome said. “I increased my jump by over a foot. I didn’t do my best at high jump, but I won so that was OK.”

Two of her teammates, Annie Rossi and Abbey Bodecker, finished 1-2, respectively, in the 100 and 300 hurdles to help lead the Sailors.

“Our core is the three girls that have been solid for us over the past two years, which is Hannah, Abbey Bodecker and Annie Rossi,” Edmison said. “Those three form a nice, solid core for us.”

The host Cardinals had several good performances. Holley won the 100 and 200 dashes and helped win the 800 and 1,600 relays. For the boys, Creighton Jensen won the 1,600 and 3,200 runs.

“I usually tend to put a lot of pressure on myself when we compete at home because all my family is here and all my friends,” Holley said. “But there’s some good teams here and I think that helped focus me on what I needed to do.”
