AMHERST — It wasn’t quite the same feeling as a year ago for the Amherst girls, but the Comets had plenty to feel good about at Saturday’s 59th annual Comet Relays.

The 1,600-meter relay team of Undrea Ballard, Lexi O’Connor, Sher Champe and Alexis Szivan won in a time of 4:07.45 in the final event of the day. Amherst held off Medina (4:07.64).

A bold slicing move by Szivan 50 meters into the anchor leg proved to be the difference. She rallied from third place to hold off Medina’s Sarah Pack in the home stretch.

“I slipped right between (Pack and Brunswick’s Camryn Scott),” Szivan said. “It was barely enough space. I knew that I had to do it so I just did it. I was thinking about (going around), but quickly decided ‘No, I can’t so I just did that.’

“The last straightaway was so tough. I was very tired, but I knew that I had to get us a first. It was so long. I knew I was running a bit crooked, but I needed to finish. I’m very proud of our team.”

Szivan split 59.8 in the 1,600 relay and Champe went 59.6. Szivan was also third in the open 1,600 (5:18.60) and split 5:19 in the distance medley relay.

The Amherst win was the only event victory for a Lorain County school at the Comets’ classic. The Amherst girls had second-place finishes in the sprint medley (1:52.95) and distance medley (12:59.35) relays. The sprint medley relay team just barely lost to Medina (1:52.90) as Champe’s anchor leg came up just short.

“We were all so tired before the 1,600 relay after all our other events,” Champe said. “We just knew that we had to come out and run our best. We’re ecstatic with the results.”

Champe also had a great day as she split 57.6 in the sprint medley relay and 2:26 for the distance medley relay.

Keystone’s Jenna Quillen was the only other top-two finisher from Lorain County. Quillen took second in the 300 hurdles (46.77) to Mentor’s Aysha Muhammad (46.48).

“I messed up going over the last hurdle coming into the last straightaway,” Quillen said. “I went over with the wrong lead leg and lost the lead (to Muhammad). I was surging but that allowed the field to come back to me. I love this meet. We’ve never been here before.”

Medina’s girls won five events including four in the field to win Saturday’s event.

The Bees amassed 93 points as the Medina girls won the Amherst meet for the first time since 2008 and for the fourth time overall. Brunswick (78) was second for the second year in a row. Amherst was the top local team, finishing eighth with 41.

Berea (108) beat defending champ St. Ignatius (66) for the boys team title.
