Until his retirement, Bob had been employed as a mechanical engineer at Lear Romec/Siegler in Elyria. There they tested fuel pumping systems for the early space program as well as military aircraft. Bob was able to design and fix anything mechanical. This skill he generously offered to family and neighbors, even after retirement in fixing yard tools or anything broken that was brought to him.
Bob and his wife, Vi, loved to travel and starting in the late 1950′s and through the late 70′s they made yearly trips with family and/or friends, Don and Evelyn Williams, to see every state in the USA.
He was a gifted artist using pencil, chalk, watercolors and oils. After his retirement, he took on the challenge of woodcarving, and as part of the Lorain County Woodcarvers he received many awards for his carvings. His children are honored to have these wonderful works of art and carving displayed in their homes.
When Bob was in his 20′s, he started building and flying U control aircraft, which he then also taught his son, Bob to fly. After the age of 80, he built and flew radio control aircraft as a member of the Lorain County RC Club. He introduced his good neighbor and friend, Tom Masaitis, to the hobby of flying and together they built and flew several planes.
He was always grateful for his many good neighbors and friends, including those he met when he ate lunch at Hazel’s or shopped for groceries at Apples. In the last 10 years of his life, he was blessed with two special neighbors, Tom and Janie Masaitis, that helped him to stay young at heart and for that he thought of them not only as friends but as extended family.
Bob is survived by his son, Robert (Marti) of Berea; and his daughter, Jean (Ron) Berger of Gulf Breeze, Florida.
In addition to his wife, Vi, he was preceded in death by his parents, Valentine Raphael Dallas and Dorthea Stich; brother, Raymond; sister, Jacquelina Ann “Jackie” (Merle, “Dutch”) Aldrich, California; sister and brother-in-law, Dorthea “Dottie” and Bob Schwensen of Canton.
A Private Memorial Service was held in his honor on Saturday, April 26, 2014 at Busch Funeral Home, Elyria.
