First round of Elyria bar TB tests are negative

ELYRIA — No active cases of tuberculosis were found as a result of testing at Boomers Bar and Pudge’s Place on Monday, according to a Mercy spokeswoman.

Mercy spokeswoman LeeAnn Hastings said staff from the Mercy TB Clinic returned to the bars Thursday to read the results of the tests. The team is in the process of reading tests from the screening that was conducted Friday and will have those results later.

As many as 33 tests were conducted at Boomers Bar and Pudge’s Place after a regular patron was diagnosed with active tuberculosis. The man, who is homeless, has been living under Pudge’s Place, according to Lorain County Administrator Jim Cordes.

Cordes said he is waiting to speak with Mercy to determine how much the man’s medical care will cost. Because he is homeless, the county may have to pay for a place to keep him while he takes his medication, as he must be quarantined from the general public during his six- to 12-month treatment.
