Candidates’ night remarks

Nine candidates took part Wednesday in a candidates’ night organized by local unions. Among those making remarks:

  • Judge Eve Belfance of the Ninth District Court of Appeals: “This court is making decisions that without even your knowing it are impacting you every day.”
  • Janet Garrett, a write-in Democratic candidate in the Fourth Congressional District, which includes Elyria: “What kind of America do you want to live in? One where we take care of each other or one where it’s everyone for himself? I know what kind of America I want to live in and I’m willing to work very hard for it.”
  • Matt Lark, a Democratic candidate for state representative in the 57th District, which includes parts of Avon, Grafton Township, LaGrange, North Ridgeville and Wellington: “I believe right-to-work is a weapon of mass destruction that will obliterate workers rights, annihilate good-paying jobs and destroy Ohio’s economy.”
  • Brendan Mackin, a Democratic candidate for state representative in the 55th District, which includes Avon Lake, Elyria, Grafton and Sheffield: “I’m running because I now have a 2-year-old son and I want a government that’s focused on solving problems rather than an unquestioning ideology that the Republicans adhere to.”
  • State Sen. Gayle Manning, R-North Ridgeville: “I hope to have the opportunity to continue to work hard for you for another four years.”
  • State Rep. Dan Ramos, D-Lorain: “The government in the state House is not of the people, for the people, by the people. It’s of the few, for the few and the decisions are made by the few.”
