AVON — It was a long time coming, but proved well worth the wait.

The Avon girls team triumphed Saturday at its home classic, the 37th Avon Reynolds Relays. It was the Eagles girls’ first win at the event since going back-to-back in 2000-01. They also won the meet in 1977, ’78, ’88, ’92 and ’94.

Avon finished with 84 points, outdistancing Rocky River (76) — winner of five of the last six Reynolds Relays. Medina Highland (74) was third.

The Avon girls put away the meet in the last event, the pole vault relay. Nicole Scarberry and Taylor Mitchell combined for 16 feet, 6 inches for second place. Neither Rocky River nor Highland scored.

The Eagles took the lead for good at 66-64 over Highland by winning the 800-meter sprint medley in the ninth of 11 running events.

Hailey Acosta, Sierra Greer, Regan Betts and Emily Joyce triumphed in a time of one minute, 53.99 seconds. Lorain took second (1:54.55) and Highland third (1:54.73).

“It feels great,” Greer said. “It feels very cool. I wasn’t too focused on the points during the meet, more so my races.

“(Taking) selfies at the track today felt so cool. Today was definitely a weird weather day — rain, sun and hail. Right now it is sun shining and everything feels good and happy.”

Betts was also thrilled with the result.

“It’s an amazing feeling,” she said. “It’s definitely a confidence-builder. We weren’t thinking about a win coming into today, only about taking care of business. We’re like a family, so today is very special.”

Greer, Betts, Joyce and Acosta were also members of the fourth-place 800 relay (1:50.32). Betts, Acosta, Joyce and Jessica Yurkovich were members of the fourth-place 1,600 relay (4:14.99). Greer, Acosta, Yurkovich and Dazha Coffey were members of the fourth-place 400 relay (52.77).

The Avon boys were second for the second straight year to Wadsworth, 121-97. The Eagles got a big boost with the return of senior John DeMarco. He had been sidelined since April 14 with a left hamstring injury.

DeMarco teamed with Antonio Orr, Logan Juhl and Mike Nose for the winning sprint medley (1:37.06) as he surged by Westlake (1:37.25) and Wadsworth (1:38.23) in the last 40 yards.

Earlier, he teamed with Corey Herman, Mike Nose and Austin Fasciana for second in the 1,600 relay (3:30.61) behind Westlake (3:29.83).

“(Westlake’s) Dan Squeri lured me a bit in the 1,600 relay, so outkicking him in the sprint medley was extra special,” DeMarco said. “Coach (Scott) Lanham came to me beforehand and told me to run my race, don’t worry about what (Squeri) is doing. Squeri passed me right before that last curve. I just ran my race and it worked out very well. He’s a good runner, but I got some solid times today.”

DeMarco suffered a slightly pulled left hamstring at practice receiving a baton exchange from Juhl for the 800 relay. He injured the same hamstring in the 400 relay at last year’s Reynolds Relays.

“Today was an important test in terms of being able to run healthy,” DeMarco said. “You’ve got to get hot coming into districts and regionals. It was important to tackle the meet that hurt me last year.”

The Avon boys also received a win from the distance medley relay of Fasciana, Kyle Herman, Corey Herman and Sean Kane (10:59.66), which held off Avon Lake (11:01.78).
