Amherst custodian allegedly molested child younger than 13

Raymond Tiller

AMHERST — The victim in a sex offense that allegedly occurred at Josiah Harris Elementary School last month was a child but police said not an Amherst Schools student.

Raymond Tiller, a 56-year-old custodian at the school, was arraigned Wednesday in Oberlin Municipal Court on two counts of kidnapping and two counts of gross sexual imposition on a child.

According to Amherst police Sgt. Dan Makruski, there is only one victim in the alleged incident, which was reported to police Monday. The victim was younger than 13, he added.

Makruski said the alleged incident happened April 5 at Harris, which is on South Lake Street.

Police are not releasing any more information on what may have happened.

An investigation led police to arrest Tiller about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at a friend’s house in Oberlin.

Tiller, who has been with the school district since 2003, has never had a school-related offense on his record, and his background checks prior to hiring turned up nothing suspicious, said Mike Molnar, executive director of educational services.

Since the arrest, Tiller has been placed on paid administrative leave, which Molnar said is protocol. No further action will be taken until the court makes a decision on Tiller’s fate.

However, the school is still taking precautions to make sure their students are safe.

Amherst School Superintendent Steve Sayers said the school immediately changed its locks and sent a call out to parents when they heard about the arrest Tuesday.

    Born that way?

Paid leave, are you kidding me? Why isn’t it UNPAID leave for now and reimbursement later? I know, I know….innocent until proven guilty but Is the money ever repaid if he is convicted?

    • Razorback Twou

What the hell are you talking about? OK, I accuse you of being an idiot, Now you don’t get paid until you prove (if you can) me wrong.

      • Kim

Being accused of being an idiot and being accused of being a pedophile are two completely different things!

        • Joe Smith

You are right, if you are falsely accused of being an idiot, no big deal, if you are falsely accused of being a pedophile a life is ruined anyway

          • missanonymous

If you admit to it it’s not false

          • Joe Smith

Even if you say you didn’t do it you are still punished like the Head Start case.

I also don’t see where he admitted anything above

        • missanonymous

          Thank you

      • luvmytoaster

You are a complete moron, what the hell are you talking about?
Oh wait a minute, maybe you’re Raymond Tiller….it all makes sense now…..

    • Jim

Luvmytoaster, are you aware of the Headstart case? False accusations of child sexual abuse are not unheard of. It’s very, very easy to make an accusation– and I don’t think someone should lose their livelihood over just an accusation.

If/when he is convicted, he will lose more than his job, and very rightfully so. If he didn’t do anything wrong, however– he has already lost quite a bit with his name being out there.

      • luvmytoaster

Jim, I do remember the Headstart case – all I am asking is why can’t he be reimbursed later if he is falsely convicted?
If he is convicted is the “paid administrative leave” money then refunded?
How long does this “paid leave” go on? Indefinitely? This could take years to go through the courts.

        • Joe Smith

How do you pay your current bills if it is unpaid? Also it is being punished without being found guilty.
I get your point and he may be guilty but we are SUPPOSED to be innocent until proven guilty

      • missanonymous

must of had strong enough evidence to get an arrest

        • Joe Smith

They had no evidence in the Head Start case yet not only were they arrested, they were convicted.

    • Americaschild

Your tax dollars and watch he will get his retirement!

  • taxpayer89

To me guilty till proven innocent

    • Kim

When it involves a child I wholeheartedly agree!

    • county_elector

Picking and choosing what parts of the Constitution to ignore is not a good idea.

      • stillsleepyeyes

obumer does it all the time………………….

    • Joe Smith

If I say you did the same as he, so are you now guilty?

      Prove you didn’t.

Hard to prove something that didn’t happen isn’t it?

See the problem with your thinking?

My statement was an example and was not an accusation.

    • tickmeoff

Then move to another country that agrees with your morals. North Korea, Cuba perhaps. Guilty till proven innocent. that is not the United States of America. You truly have your head up your Kista!

  • ExVaultDweller

My child attends Josiah Harris Elementary School and we never received a phone call about this from the school. Hmm!

  • Shelley Miller

Am I understanding that while the crimes took place at Harris school.. the child was not a student of Amherst schools? So he brought a child with him to the building?

    • Americaschild

Kidnapped a child, molested her and now is off with pay and will get his retirement. Why is he out on bond?

      • Joe Smith

Where did you read that he admitted to it or there was indisputable proof or when he was found guilty by a court?

If he did it he should pay big time, but the Head Start case has changed my mind about cases like this

      • jz

Read the Constitution and some law books so you understand the purpose of what a bond is and why we have such a thing as part of our Judicial system then you will realize the stupidity of your question. Hint. It has nothing to do with liking or coddling criminals.

  • Americaschild

This scum should be in jail without bond.

    • tickmeoff

What’s to say you won’t be accused of something you didn’t do. You’re name Americaschild is the furthest thing from the truth. Most of what comes out of your mouth sounds as if it comes from Russia, not the United States.

      • Joe Smith

We are closer to being a Russia today than the USA we use to know. Not much of an exaggeration anymore.
