A resident of Elyria for more than 60 years, he graduated from Elyria High School in 1950. He also attended Fenn Technical Institute, a division of Fenn College (now Cleveland State University). He served four years in the United States Air Force, with oversea assignments in Korea and Japan. He received National Defense Service, Korean Service, Good Conduct and UN Service Medals.
Upon his discharge from the United States Air Force, he was employed at General Motors from 1955-61, where he participated as a union officer. In 1961, he was employed by the Federal Aviation Administration in Oberlin as an electronic technician and retired in 1988.
He was elected to the Elyria School Board and served from 1977-81, serving as president from 1980-81. He continued to serve his community as an Urban League African American male mentor at Franklin Elementary and Elyria High schools, served on the Elyria City Council, at-large seat, five terms, NAACP, 40 plus years, past president, chairman of Legal Redress Committee, Lorain County Joint Vocational School Board of Education 1980-81, and was inducted into the Elyria School and Friends Alumni Association Distinguished Alumni 2001. He is a lifetime attendee of the Original Church of God, in Elyria.
He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 31 years, June; son, Herman M., Jr. of Cleveland; daughters, Dolores (James) Morrow of Widefield, Colorado, Elizabeth Fields of Lakewood, Sandra M. (Carl) Ball and Lisa D. (Kevin) Godbolt of Elyria; stepsons, Joseph (Kelly) Wisher of Oberlin, Rudy Bomarc of Elyria, June (Wilfred) Owens of Vallejo, California, Patricia Brown of Sierra Vista, Arizona; brothers, Carl Larkins, of Brook Park, Floyd Larkins of Elyria; sisters, Christine Holmes of Brook Park, Yvonne Glass of Elyria; brothers, Steven Larkins and James Frierson of Elyria, Phillip Larkins of Columbus; sister, Vantoria Boulton (Bernard) of Virginia; 19 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father; son, Dale A. Larkins; daughter, Karen A. Crisp; and granddaughter, Michelle Sutton.
Friends may call Sunday, May 11, 2014, from 6 until 8 P.M., in the Original Church of God, 512 Edward Street, Elyria, where services will be Monday, May 12, 2014, at 10 A.M. Elder Ernest McKinney, Pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Brookdale Cemetery in Elyria. VFW Post #1079, Elyria, will give full Military Honors.
