ELYRIA — An explosion and fire at a home at 187 Bath St., around 11:10 a.m. today seriously injured a woman.

Neighbors said the explosion blew off some of the woman’s clothes, and she was covered with burns and screaming for help.

“It was terrible,” said Don Starcher, of 176 Bath St. “She was burnt from head to toe.”

Police haven’t identified the woman who neighbors said was in her 20s. Elyria Fire Chief Rich Benton said the woman was hospitalized at University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center.

Assistant Fire Chief Tim Mitchell said the explosion and fire began in a rear unit of the five-unit, two-story house, which was substantially damaged. The home is between West River Road North and state Route 57. Mitchell said firefighters needed about 20 minutes to extinguish the fire.
