ELYRIA — Police searched the home of two suspected drug traffickers Tuesday to find cocaine, a gun and the two men living in “deplorable” conditions, according to police.

Mario McCray, 33, was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, having weapons under disability and four counts of trafficking cocaine about 2:15 p.m. at his home at 504 Fairmount St.

McCray’s roommate, 21-year-old Anthony McShepherd, was charged with trafficking cocaine and possession of cocaine at the same time.

Police began investigating the men after receiving numerous calls since March from their neighbors about possible drug activity at the house, Elyria police Capt. Chris Costantino said.

When police searched the home they found the two men inside along with a loaded .22-caliber semi-automatic pistol and crack cocaine, Costantino said.

But it was the condition of the rental home that had police call the city’s Building Department. Kevin Brubaker, the department’s senior manager, said the house was not suitable to live in.

Costantino described the house as “deplorable,” and said that there were structural, plumbing and electric issues that made it unsafe.

The men were taken to Lorain County Jail where they were being held Thursday.

Police are already familiar with McCray, who has a lengthy criminal record in Lorain County dating to 2000 when he was found guilty of possession of cocaine, obstructing official business and possession of drug paraphernalia. That same year he was found guilty of trying to escape from custody. McCray was found guilty of multiple drug charges in the years following, with the most recent conviction being 2010 when he was found guilty of trafficking cocaine.

McCray was being held on a $250,000 bond and McShepherd has a $7,500 bond.

Property records from the Lorain County auditor’s website lists the property owner as Jackie Allgood, who has an Elyria P.O. Box.
