Driver crashes as car hit with paintballs

ELYRIA — A man who thought he was being shot at drove his vehicle off the road and hit a tree, sending both he and his friend to the hospital.

Around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday, Xavier Small, 18, was driving with his friend Isaiah Nelson, 18, in the passenger’s seat on the 1100 block of Melvyn Lane when they both heard shots, which later turned out to be from a paintball gun.

Small told police he was startled when he heard the shots hit the car’s window.

Small said he hit the accelerator and ran straight into a tree. Both Small and Nelson said they didn’t know from where the shots originated.

Police arrived at the scene to find the men in a front yard in the area. Police reported paintball splatters on the driver’s side of the car and four paintballs lying in the road, but couldn’t find a suspect on Wednesday.

The men were treated and released at University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center.
