Dem auditor hopeful to attend fundraiser

LORAIN — John Patrick Carney, the Democrat challenging Ohio Auditor Dave Yost, will hold a campaign event Monday.

The “Beers & Brats” event will be 4 to 7 p.m. at the Laborer’s Hall, 2089 North Ridge Road E. in Lorain.

Several local political and union leaders will also be in attendance.

Carney, a state representative from the Columbus area, was unopposed in the May primary, as was his Republican opponent. Yost is seeking a second term as state auditor.

Solid waste district receives EPA grants

ELYRIA — The Lorain County Solid Waste Management District has been awarded nearly $170,000 in grants from the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency.

The largest award was a market development grant of $154,500 and will be used in conjunction with Elyria-based Quality Blow Molding, according to a news release from the district.

“This is the second time the district has partnered with Quality Blow Molding to apply for state funding,” Solid Waste Director Keith Bailey said in the release. “With both grants awards, Quality has been able to purchase new equipment to (process) additional materials, which led to hiring additional staff to keep up with the work load.”

The other grants awarded to the district total $14,800 and will be used to purchase new equipment and to expand its tire collection program to accommodate agricultural tire collection. A date for the tire collection will be set later, the release said.
