Esther C. Hunt

Esther C. Hunt, 103, of Oberlin, died Thursday, May 15, 2014, at Kendal at Oberlin. She was born February 14, 1911, in Cincinnati.

As a child, Miss Hunt moved to Lorain, where she made her home until she moved to Kendal at Oberlin in 1993. She was a 1927 graduate of Lorain High School. Miss Hunt attended Oberlin College for two years. She received her BS in Education from Ohio State University and her Master of Arts from Case Western Reserve University. From 1929 until 1945, Miss Hunt shared her passion for teaching children as a kindergarten and first grade teacher at the former Boone Elementary School, Lorain. Among her many students was Toni Morrison, with whom she had always kept in contact. She was a member of the Agudath B’nai Israel Synagogue, Lorain, where she was a member of the Temple Sisterhood. Miss Hunt was a member of Hadassah International and all the teacher/education organizations. She loved reading and collecting antique books and china. Miss Hunt was an avid traveler who often visited England, where she purchased many antique children’s picture books. Shop owners would have very rare books which she had purchased and donated to the book collection of Oberlin College.

She is survived by many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Miss Hunt was preceded in death by her parents, Anna (nee Schneider) in 1949 and Harry Hunt in 1922; her brother, Stuart Hunt in 1950; and her sister, Selma Edith Hunt on May 30, 1989.

Funeral services will be Sunday, May 18, 2014, at 2 P.M., in the Walter A. Frey Funeral Home, 700 West Erie Ave., Lorain. Burial will follow in Salem Cemetery, Sheffield Township.
