George R. Hoffman, 88, of Elyria and formerly of Lorain, passed away peacefully Friday, May 16, 2014 at the Wesleyan Village in Elyria. He was born June 12, 1925 in Lorain and had been a resident of Elyria since 1979.
He graduated from Lorain High School, Class of 1943-B and served as a Sergeant in the Army Air Corp (U.S. Air Force) from 1943-1946 during WWII.
George served as a Captain for the Lorain City Firefighters, retiring in 1977. Following retirement, George became a realtor, selling property in the Amherst/Lorain areas. He was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ in Elyria and Firefighter Union #267 of Lorain. He enjoyed fishing on Lake Erie, playing ping pong, helping others at all times. While living at Wesleyan Village, George enjoyed Men’s Fellowship, serving on committees and being active with Kiwanis. He was very intelligent and enjoyed working with numbers and was conservative with his political views.
George is survived by four nieces, Kim, Barb, Kathy and Susan; and many grand nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia B. Hoffman (2006); brother, Carl Hoffman; two sisters, Lauretta Murray and Alma Zieba; and his parents, Gustav and Marie Hoffman (nee Alexander).
Friends may call Tuesday, May 20, 2014 at the Busch Funeral and Crematory Services, 114 Second Street, Elyria, from 10 A.M. until the time of service at 12 Noon. Reverend Bret Myers, Pastor of St. Paul United Church of Christ in Elyria, will officiate. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery in Lorain.
