William D. “Bill” Sims

Sims_WilliamOBIT FLAGWilliam D. “Bill” Sims, 80, of Elyria, passed away Thursday, May 22, 2014, at Ames Family Hospice in Westlake, following a short illness. He was born February 1, 1934 in Highland Park, Michigan.

Bill served in the United States Air Force, and was a Supervisory Air Traffic Control Specialist, working at The Cleveland ARTCC for a total of 36 years of government service. He was a member of LaPorte United Methodist Church and served on various church boards, taught Sunday School there, and ran the church’s free meal program for 11 years. Bill also served with the Lorain County Mental Health Board, Youth Services Board, Rehabilitation Board, and was a Guardian at Ad Litem Voices for Children. Bill treasured spending time with his family, and enjoyed gardening, the outdoors, and watching professional sports.

Survivors include his wife of 30 years, Karen M. (nee Elder); three daughters, Ashley P. Sims of Monroeville, New Jersey, Hillary A. Haddix (Brian) of Cuyahoga Falls, Erin V. Sims of Elyria; a son, Fraser A. Sims of Olmsted Falls; and three grandchildren, Lila, Fiona, and Alec.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, William H. and Violet (nee Smith) Sims.

There will be no visitation. Memorial Services will be 7 P.M., Sunday, May 25, 2014, at LaPorte United Methodist Church, 2071 Grafton Rd., Elyria, where the Reverend Jonathan McCleery will officiate. Burial will be private at LaPorte Cemetery, where V.F.W. Post #1079 will provide full military honors.
