Duane S. Vance, 89, of Amherst, passed away Saturday, May 31, 2014 at Good Samaritan Health Group, Avon. He was born July 20, 1924 in Madison Township, Pennsylvania, to the late Harry and Violet (nee Holler) Vance.
Duane served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He was a member of the 455th Bomb Group, serving in Europe. Duane wed his wife of 68 years, Janet N. (nee Osborne) on November 28, 1945. They resided in Pennsylvania until 1947 when they relocated to Lorain. Duane was employed at U.S. Steel Corporation, Lorain, from 1947 until his retirement in 1985.
In retirement, Duane enjoyed travelling, camping, fishing, water skiing, boating, canoeing, stained glass, woodworking and mechanics. In the past, he was a Boy Scout Master in Lorain and introduced the Pinewood Derby to the Boy Scout Dens in Lorain. He was a former member of United Steelworkers of America Local 1104 and the Holiday Rambler Trailer Club.
In addition to his wife, Janet; Duane is survived by his daughter, Cynthia A. (Ronald) Palmer of Vermilion; three grandchildren, Darrin Palmer of North Ridgeville, James (Rachael) Palmer of Elyria, Christine (Jeremy) Nance of Amherst; and great grandchildren, Morgan, Gavin, Lauren, Donovan and Jillian.
He was preceded in death by his son, Dennis L. (1966); and a sister, Virginia Wilson.
Family will receive friends 4 to 8 P.M., Monday, June 2, 2014 at the Garland-Misencik Funeral Home, 851 Park Avenue, Amherst. There will be an 11 A.M. funeral service Tuesday, June 3, 2014 at the funeral home, followed by burial in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Township.
