Hugh Irving Damon

Damon_HughOBIT FLAGHugh Irving Damon, 89, of Amherst, passed away Sunday, June 1, 2014, at Amherst Manor Nursing Home, following a brief illness. He was born August 27, 1924 in Gerry, New York.

Hugh was raised in New York before entering the United States Navy. He proudly served his country during WWII as part of the D-Day invasion and experienced his landing craft being sunk beneath him. Hugh had made his home in Amherst since 1971.

Hugh was employed at the Pepsi Cola Plant for over 35 years, retiring as a plant superintendent. He loved to play bingo and enjoyed wintering in Florida with his wife, Julia, for over 20 years.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of 69 years, Julia Grace Damon (nee Foster); his daughter, Janet (Ronald) Linn of Amherst; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; his sister, Jean Damon of Strongsville; as well as her niece, Sherry Wallace.

Hugh was preceded in death by his daughter, Susanne Groot in 1991; and his parents, Carl and Grace Damon (nee Ireland).

Friends may call Tuesday, June 3, 2014, from 6 until 8 P.M., at the Hempel Funeral Home, 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 4, 2014, at 11 A.M., in the funeral home. The Reverend David Plant, Pastor of St. Peter United Church of Christ, will officiate. Burial will follow at Crownhill Cemetery, Amherst.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Cleveland Area Chapter, P.O. Box 74924, Cleveland, OH 44194-4924.
