He was a 1950 graduate of Columbia High School, Columbia Station. He drove a milk truck for Producers Milk Co. in Cleveland, worked as a plumber, then moved with his family, to West Smith Road in Chatham Township in 1967, where he farmed for 47 years. A dedicated farmer – he had a true love for the land, he was known in the community for his tremendous work ethic and willingness to lend a helping hand.
He retired from Medina County Vocational Center after more than 20 years as Maintenance Supervisor. He was an excellent boiler engineer. A man of faith, he was a founding member of Our Lady Help of Christians Catholic Church, where he was instrumental in building all the original church buildings. He served on the building and maintenance committee, was a Eucharistic minister, and was in a Bible study group. He was a member of Ohio Farm Bureau. In retirement, he and his wife traveled extensively and split time between the Ohio farm and their North Port, Florida residence. Giving his best each and every day was very important to him.
Mr. Bohner was the eldest child of Edward and Louise (Vogt) Bohner of Columbia Station. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Margaret West; and son, Thomas. He married the love of his life, Mary Louise (White) Bohner, August 18, 1951. They were married for 62 years.
He is survived by his sisters, Doris Walter (Berea), Edna Vaughn (Strongsville), Norma Nichols (Olmsted Falls), and Nancy Mattox (Berea).
He is the father of eight children, Debra (Jim) Gunkelman Columbus, Tom, deceased, Bruce (Linda), Lodi, Brenda (Bill) Disbrow of Chatham Township, David of Lodi, Tim (Brenda) of Jackson, Michigan, Gerard (Kathy) of Congress Township and Betsy (Jeff) Mikalacki of Medina.
He was the beloved grandfather of Jennifer (Rich) Bowden, David Gunkelman (Elisa Nassoiy), Jessica (John) Metzger, Sarah Gunkelman (Kevin Hale), James (Josie) Gunkelman, Bruce Bohner, Jr., Erin (Andy) Nagel, William (Jamey) Disbrow, Caitlin Disbrow (Brian Black), Paige Disbrow, David Tomblin, Denise (Eric) Nott, Dana (Kyle) Conroy, Daniel Bohner, Darin Bohner and Duane Bohner, Jerrod (Bridget) Bohner, Amy Bohner, Edward Bohner, Samuel Bohner, Julie Mikalacki and Jay Mikalacki. He also left behind 10 beloved great-grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by family and friends.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, June 5, 2014, at 10:30 A.M., at Our Lady Help of Christians Parish, 9608 Norwalk Road, Litchfield, with Father Ron Bryda as the Celebrant and Father Philip Pritt giving the Homily. Burial will follow at Chatham Township Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday, June 4, 2014, from 4 until 8 P.M., at the Waite & Son Funeral Home, 765 N. Court St., Medina and one hour prior to services on Thursday, at the church.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Chatham Fire Department or Our Lady Help of Christians Parish.
