Super Bowl to scrap Roman numerals for 2016

NEW YORK (AP) — The Super Bowl will scrap the Roman numerals for a year.

The 50th edition of the game will be played in February 2016 in Santa Clara, California. The NFL said Wednesday it will be called “Super Bowl 50″ instead of “Super Bowl L.”

In 2017, the league will revert to Roman numerals, referring to the 51st edition as “Super BowlLI.”

The NFL first started using Roman numerals for the fifth Super Bowl in 1971.

    Super Bowl 50!

And how many have the Browns won?

Ok……How many have they played in?

Oh well, it is a new year, a new coach and a new quarterback.

Deja Vu…Or will Number 50 be the charm.

They dumped Roman numerals because 3/4s of the population probably can’t decipher them these days.

      Sad and true.

      You are correct.
We Hardly touched on them in grade school so I never used them and forgot all that stuff.
Only time I see those used is during the super bowl ad I’m to embarrassed to ask which one it is.
I did see them explaied in a book last year but never bothered to memorize it.
      Use it or lose it.

They say it’s only for this year…I’m guessing they couldn’t come up with any “Super Bowl L” graphics that looked good, or maybe a big L on your shirt could mean something else………….

      • golfingirl

Good point…the letter “L” also means a joint, blunt etc. in Urban Slang.

        Just ask Josh Gordon!

Sounds like a bathroom cleaning product…

This is by far the most important article the Chronicle has published this year.
