WELLINGTON — A woman who allegedly stabbed her husband in the chest was found drunk and asleep on her couch when officers came to investigate last week, a police report said.

Melissa Carruthers, 29, was charged with aggravated assault, domestic violence and resisting arrest about midnight May 25 after police said she stabbed her husband in the chest with a kitchen knife.

About 11:45 p.m. May 24, police got a call from the Huron County Sheriff’s Office saying that Carruthers had stabbed her husband, Brandon Carruthers, 32, twice in the chest at their home on the 500 block of Barker Street in Wellington.

Brandon Carruthers then drove himself to his mother’s house in Wakeman before he was taken to Mercy Allen Hospital in Oberlin.

Officers went to the Carruthers’ house, where they found Melissa Carruthers asleep on her couch along with three of her children: a 2-year-old, a 3-year-old and a 9-year-old, the report said.

After police woke her, Melissa Carruthers agreed to talk with police outside. They noticed her swaying and smelling of alcohol and the 29-year-old mother told them she’d had “lots and lots of beer” to drink that night, the report said.

Officers led Melissa Carruthers through the kitchen where they found a pool of blood, two bloody shirts and a steak knife on the ground, the report said.

Through tears, Melissa Carruthers told police she had stabbed her husband earlier that evening because he was yelling at her.

“If I get arrested and taken away from my kids, there will be a fight,” Melissa Carruthers told police.

Officers put Melissa Carruthers in handcuffs, which she tried to slip out of multiple times before they were able to get her into a patrol car, the report said.

Police told Melissa Carruthers that her husband was being treated for the stab wounds in the hospital to which she replied, “Good, he deserves it,” the report said.

The children were given to the care of Melissa Carruthers’ mother. Children Services investigated the incident.

Brandon Carruthers was treated and released for his wounds May 25.

Melissa Carruthers was held at the county jail until she was released on bond May 26.
