Mary V. Harsar, 96, (nee Sylvester) of Amherst, passed away Sunday, June 8, 2014, at her home, while under the care of New Life Hospice. Born May 7, 1918 in Lorain, she lived in Lorain until moving to Amherst in 1972. She graduated from Lorain High School in 1937 and from Kent State University in 1973.
Mary worked as a bookkeeper for the Jeancola Coal Co. and the Lorain Goodwill Industries, Lorain City Schools as a cleaning matron at Lakeview School and the Lorain County Speedway. After raising her children, she went to college in her mid-forties at Kent State University and received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Education. She was employed as a teacher (Fairhome Elementary) and L.D. Tutor at Southview High School in the Lorain City Schools. She enjoyed tennis, bowling, golf, sewing, refinishing furniture and reading.
Mary is survived by her son, Henry Harsar, Jr. (Nancy) of Amherst Township; daughters, Barbara (George) Neuhoff of Amherst, Janet (Ralph) Kirk of Avon and Janice (Douglas) Beckler of Lorain; 14 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Henry E. Harsar, Sr. in 2004: parents, Dominic Sylvester (Domenico Sylvestro) in 1960 and Lucy Sylvester (Lucia Liberatore) in 1961.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, June 10, 2014, from 4 until 8 P.M., at at Dovin and Reber Jones Funeral & Cremation Center, 1110 Cooper Foster Park Rd., Amherst. Closing Prayers will be said Wednesday, June 11, 2014, at 9 A.M., in the Funeral Center, followed by Funeral Mass at 9:30 A.M., at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 200 St. Joseph Dr., Amherst. The Reverend Father Michael Denk will be the Celebrant. Entombment will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.
