MEDINA — Jury selection began Monday in the trial of a 20-year-old Elyria man charged with neglecting and abusing his infant son a year ago.

Christian Vanmeter faces charges of felonious assault and child endangering. If the jury finds him guilty, he could be sentenced to up to eight years in prison.

Vanmeter is accused of breaking the bones of his 3½-month-old son in late June 2013, according to records. Police reported that an investigation began after a hospital alerted them to the child’s injuries, which they said indicated abuse.

Vanmeter, who’s represented by attorney Jeremy Samuels, previously pleaded guilty to his charges. He later revoked his guilty plea and requested a trial.

Vanmeter has awaited his trial on $300,000 bond at the Medina County Jail.
