Midview senior Amanda Beursken hit home runs like no Lorain County player ever had before and this week was honored by the county’s coaches with the Division I player of the year award.
Beursken, who finished with 27 career home runs, received her award prior to the 28th annual Lorain County Senior All-Star Game on Tuesday along with Clearview’s Sarah Kaya, who was named Division II’s top player. Columbia junior Kailey Minarchick was not on hand to receive her award as the Divisions III-IV player of the year.
Beursken was joined on the Division I first team by teammate Erin DiFranco. Elyria, which made its fourth straight trip to state this year, had four players — Kaitlyn Laseke, Madison Fullmer, Anna Daly and Elizabeth Ellis — on the first team.
Amherst also placed four players on the first team in Zoe Beetler, Brooklynn Gonzalez, Ashlee Dahman and Sarah Miller — the only freshman on the Division I first team — while Lacey Reichert was named coach of the year in her first season on the job.
“I’m very honored to be selected as player of the year,” Beursken said. “I’ve worked hard on my game over the past four years. I have always been confident in my abilities, so it’s a good feeling.”
Midview coach Mike Ives said Beursken played through an elbow injury that hampered her throughout her senior year.
“She never picked up a bat except in a game all season and she was still able to perform the way she did,” Ives said. “Nobody knew about her injury except us.”
Beursken finished the year with a .407 average, 10 home runs and 35 RBIs.
“If I had one disappointment this season is that teams didn’t pitch to her,” Ives said. “She had 26 walks. If they had pitched to her I would have loved to have seen what would have happened.”
Avon’s Anna Edwards, Alexis Dill and Olivia Kula, and North Ridgeville senior Marissa Caraballo rounded out the Division I first team.
Minarchick had a strong season at the plate and in the pitcher’s circle to win the Division III-IV award.
She hit .473 with a home run, 13 doubles and 27 RBIs, while going 16-4 with a 1.62 ERA. Four of her Raiders teammates — Amanda Sedlock, Brooke White, Emily Viccarone and Taylor Napoli — also made first team.
“Kailey had a solid season,” Columbia coach Ken Lugo said. “She was working on some things with her pitching, but she hit the ball better than she ever has before. Her maturity really impressed me this year. Next year the sky is the limit for her. She’s going to a lot of college camps and working on her game. I’m excited to see what she can do as a senior.”
Elyria Catholic placed three players on the Division III-IV first team in Emily Hastings, Katie Gauntner and Kenzie Rozanc.
Oberlin, the only local Division III-IV team to advance to districts, had two players — Judith Lesesne and Olivia Pfeifer — on the first team, while Josie Martin was named coach of the year.
Black River’s Madison Combs and Tori Smart, and Wellington’s Brittney Wallace rounded out the all-county first team.
In Division II, Clearview’s Sarah Kaya added to her trophy case with the player of the year award. Kaya was 17-8 with a 1.89 ERA to go along with 281 strikeouts. She also led the Clippers in hitting with a .438 average, 17 RBIs and 12 doubles.
Kaya was also named a Division II All-Ohio first-team selection and was the recipient of the Lorain County Coaches Association’s player of the year award.
Fellow Clearview seniors Chelsea Kincer and Niki Roush also made first team.
Keystone placed almost its entire starting lineup on the Division II first team as seniors Morgan McNulty and Carleigh Herrington, junior Liz Hayes, sophomores Destiny Weber and Summer Constable and freshmen Lauren Shaw and Sammie Stefan made the list.
First-year Brookside coach Don Metcalf was named Division II coach of the year and two of his players — Eryn Banfield and Kirsten Lara — made first team.
Vermilion’s Sydney Virgin and Firelands’ Emma Ranney were also Division II first-teamers.
