LORAIN – After holding a few people hostage in their house Monday morning, a man released the people and shot himself, according to police.

Around 11:30 p.m. Sunday night, Torrey Hill, 35, of Lorain, knocked on the door of a woman who had a temporary protection order against him. She called for help, and the Lorain County Sheriff’s Department went to the woman’s house on the 300 block of East 41st Street in Sheffield Township, but found that Hill had left after knocking on the woman’s door and breaking her car window, according to a press release.

Hill had outstanding warrants out of Lorain Municipal Court for felonious assault, intimidation of a crime victim, domestic violence and violating a temporary protection order.

Shortly after the incident, around 12:30 a.m., Lorain police, along with deputies, responded to 122 East 23rd St. where they believed Hill was holding a few people hostage.

The people in the home told police Hill “would not be taken alive,” and had a firearm, according to a press release. The Lorain SWAT and Hostage Negotiations Team spoke with Hill and convinced him to release the people.

After they were released, police heard a possible gunshot from inside the house.

Police tried to call Hill for several hours after the incident before they went into the home, where they found Hill lying dead on the second floor.

Police wrote that the “gunshot wound proved to be fatal,” but Lorain County Coroner Dr. Stephen Evans said they are investigating the incident and cause of death.

The handgun was found near Hill’s body.
