LORAIN — Nine people were injured, two critically, in a head-on crash in the 4100 block of Kolbe Road about 1:40 p.m. Wednesday.

A woman in a southbound 2001 Chevrolet Camaro drove left of center and struck a northbound Kingston of Vermilion van, according to a news release from Lorain Police Officer Kyle Gelenius of the police department’s traffic bureau. The Camaro then caromed left and struck a tree before stopping in a yard.

The Ford van, carrying eight people, remained in the road. A resident told a Chronicle-Telegram photographer that he and another resident pulled the Camaro driver from the car.

The 54-year-old Camaro driver and an 87-year-old female van passenger were hospitalized in critical condition at MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland, said Herb de la Porte, LifeCare Ambulance vice president. He said the other seven people were taken to area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries. Gelenius wrote the van driver was treated and released.

Gelenius, who didn’t return calls, did not identify the Camaro driver or anyone in the van. Kingston of Vermilion representatives did not return calls.

Gelenius wrote in the news release that it was unclear why the Camaro driver drove left of center and no charges have been filed. He said the case would be sent to the Lorain prosecutor’s office after the investigation is concluded.
