Charges dropped against woman involved in Elyria basketball game fracas

ELYRIA — Charges of disorderly conduct have been dropped against an Elyria woman involved in a fracas at an Elyria High School girls basketball game in December.

The charge was dismissed against Yvette Spraggins at the request of the Elyria city prosecutor’s office, according to the offices of Elyria Municipal Court Judge Gary Bennett.

Spraggins was scheduled to go to trial in Bennett’s court Thursday.

Spraggins was one of two Elyria women charged in connection with an incident that occurred at Elyria High School during a girls basketball game between Elyria and Strongsville High School.

Police said the incident began when a 6-year-old reportedly made a derogatory remark to some Elyria High students, who allegedly responded to the child with obscene gestures.

Dawn Thall, an assistant Strongsville varsity basketball coach, also was charged with disorderly conduct after she was accused of shoving a parent.

Thall was restrained by a woman identified as Spraggins and punched in the face by another, LaTonya Mahone, police said.

Charges were dropped in April against Thall after police reviewed evidence, said Michelle Nedwick, an Elyria city prosecutor.

Mahone was placed in a diversion program, court records show.
