Gilbert M. Evanish, Sr.

Evanish_GilbertOBIT FLAGGilbert M. Evanish, Sr., 94, of Amherst, passed away Tuesday, July 1, 2014, at Golden Acres Nursing Home in Amherst, following a lengthy illness. He was born January 21, 1920 in Lorain.

Gilbert was a graduate of Lorain High School, Class of 1938B. He served in the United States Army in the 101st Airborne Division during World War II. He was a paratrooper on D-Day and was wounded in battle in Carentan, France. Gilbert was employed for 28 years at B.F. Goodrich in Avon Lake, retiring in 1982.

He was a member of SS Cyril and Methodius Church in Lorain, where he was a member of the Holy Name Society and ushered for many years. He was also a member of the 101st Airborne VFW and B.F. Goodrich Retirees Groups. He loved fishing, gardening, and polka music, and he cared for his wife, Anne, with dedication for 30 years.

Mr. Evanish is survived by his sons, Gilbert M. Evanish, Jr. of Denver, Colorado, Glenn A. Evanish (wife, Gihong) of Suwanee, Georgia; and daughter, Janice Klesta of Elyria; grandchildren, Holly, Jill, and Christopher Klesta, Kelly and Casey Evanish; brother, Edward Evanish of Elyria; uncle of many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Anne M. Evanish (nee Simashkevich) 2004; brothers, Joseph and Anthony; parents, Joseph and Mary Evanish.

Friends may call 10 A.M. unitl 12 P.M.,, Saturday, July 5, 2014, at Busch Funeral Home, 114 Second Street, Elyria. Prayer service will be at 12 P.M., at the funeral home, with a Mass of Christian Burial, 12:30 P.M., at St. Agnes Church, Elyria. The Reverend Albert Veigas will be the Celebrant.
