SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Utah mother told authorities that she killed six of her newborns and stored their bodies in a garage because she was addicted to drugs and didn’t want to deal with the responsibility of raising them, police said Tuesday, revealing a suspected motive for the first time.

Megan Huntsman, 39, was heavily into a meth addiction when she strangled or suffocated the infants from 1996 to 2006, Pleasant Grove Police Capt. Mike Roberts told The Associated Press.

She wasn’t worried about potential health problems caused by her drug abuse while pregnant, she simply didn’t want to care for them, he said. “It was completely selfish. She was high on drugs and didn’t want the babies, or the responsibility,” Roberts said. “That was her priority at the time.”

Authorities think a seventh baby found in her Pleasant Grove garage after an April search was stillborn.

Police had previously declined to discuss a motive in the case, saying only that it had been uncovered during interviews with Huntsman.

Huntsman has been held in Utah County Jail since April 13, and her bail has been set at $6 million. She has been charged with six counts of first-degree murder and is due in court in Provo on July 21. She has not yet entered a plea.

Her lawyer, public defender Anthony Howell, declined comment Tuesday, saying office policy prevents him from discussing open cases.

Huntsman’s estranged husband, Darren West, spent more than eight years in federal prison after pleading guilty to meth charges. He was released to a halfway house in Salt Lake City in January.

West made the grisly discovery April 12 while cleaning out the garage of the home he had shared with Huntsman. He told police he found a dead infant in a small white box covered with electrician’s tape.

Six other bodies were found after police obtained a search warrant. Documents show the newborns had been wrapped in shirts or towels inside individual boxes in the garage.

West lived with Huntsman during the decade their children were killed before going to federal prison in 2006, but he isn’t a suspect in the deaths, Roberts said. Investigators don’t know how he could have been oblivious to the pregnancies or deaths, but they don’t plan to bring him in for further questioning.

Huntsman remains the only suspect in the investigation, which remains open, Roberts said. Results of a psychological examination of Huntsman haven’t been disclosed.

DNA results revealed Tuesday showed that all seven babies were full term and that five were girls and two were boys. Those tests also confirmed that West was biological father of the infants.

Previous tests from the Utah state lab found that the babies were likely dead anywhere from two to 10 years or more, Roberts said.

The day of the grisly discovery, Huntsman told police that were eight or nine dead babies in her home, a previously released search warrant affidavit showed. But Roberts said Huntsman was confused and was taking a ballpark guess. Roberts said Tuesday investigators continue to believe there were only seven.

If only she had listened to Sandra Fluke and had the Government pay for her Birth Control… tsk, tsk, tsk.

    • reallyoldfarts

Or take the babies to a fire department, police station or hospital. That is what Save Haven laws are for. No questions asked.

Keep moving along, folks. NOTHING to see here.

      • Joe Smith

Yet liberals are ok just killing them by the millions in the womb even late term.

        • Rtgh123

Crazy liberals want easy access to birth control so that there will be fewer abortions. I don’t understand it.

          • Joe Smith

It is easy, you go to the pharmacy and buy it, very simple, if you can’t afford it they can go to planned parenthood .
And liberals are not the ones against abortion, its those crazy religious people

          • Rtgh123

Yes, very simple. Are the birth control pills near the condoms? Also, the IUDs. Those are in the condom area and they can be inserted without seeing a doctor – so insurance coverage wouldn’t be helpful for birth control pills or getting an IUD. Just go to Walmart! Thanks for the information.

          • Rtgh123

I’m not sure if you’ve heard, but Republican sheeple would also like to shut down Planned Parenthoods.

      • Rtgh123

Exactly! It makes sense to make it more difficult for women to obtain birth control so that there will be fewer pregnancies and abortions.

        • Joe Smith

Can’t get much easier than to go to the local Wal-Mart or planned parenthood. Or just keep your legs shut or keep it in your pants.

          • Rtgh123

I was not aware that birth control pills were available OTC like buying aspirin. That’s good to know.

          • golfingirl

There are no prescription drugs which are easier to get than Birth Control Pills.

The vast majority of prescription drug plans cover them, under a generic copay of about $10.

If you pay cash, some can be purchased for even less than that….approximately $9 per month. There is a drugstore on nearly every corner these days, access is not an issue.

If you don’t have $9, free clinics and Planned Parenthood provide them for free!

No one said they were available OTC, except you. Your local Wal-Mart has a pharmacy. Get a prescription and go there.

If you can’t afford 9 bucks, or can’t be bothered to go to a clinic to get them for free, then keep your legs crossed!

Birth control is a personal responsibility, not a right.

          • Rtgh123

Cancer caused by smoking and all fat people illnesses should not be paid for by others. Personal responsibility includes living a healthy lifestyle.

          • golfingirl

            I agree.

          • Rtgh123

I’m not talking about those who have their own insurance coverage. Although it is the healthy premium payers paying for irresponsible sick people. Poor people, specifically Medicaid recipients who have medical problems caused by an inability to stop feeding their faces or smoking should not receive medical care that is paid for by tax payers. Let them die. It’s called personal responsibility – just like birth control is a personal responsibility.

          • Rtgh123

Honestly, after further thought, smokers, fat people, alcoholics – anyone who lacks personal responsibility for their health should not be eligible for any insurance coverage pertaining to health issues that result from bad health habits. Why should my health insurance premiums be higher because these people lack personal responsibility? They should pay all expenses oit of pocket or die. Perhaps provide pain medication so that they will die more humanely. Same goes for people who have accidents due to wreckless behavior. Crash a motorcycle and it’s your own fault? Maybe some personal responsibility would have prevented the crash. Insurance should not cover this kind of thing.

I am praying that Romney and Palin run. Dumb and Dumber.

        • Joe Smith

Yet they would have done a better job than Obama, of course that would not be hard to do.

    • Rtgh123

However, erectile dysfunction pills, and enlarger apparatuses are covered so that your husband can have relations with your mom.

      • Bill Love

none of it should be coverd its the person responsible to handle getting there own birth control

        • Joe Smith

Right on Bill and that is from a man with love in his name.LOL

        • Rtgh123

You find your own Sis to be Delish, so of course you don’t have any hands on experience with ED products. Ask your mom how they work for your husband.

          • golfingirl

That is about as ignorant a comment I have ever seen posted on this site.

It is obvious Rtgh123 = TruthWhisperer.

          • Starryeyes63

I think you may be right he forgot to “switch” names when replying………..BUSTED

      • Starryeyes63

No ED pills are NOT covered by most insurance.

  • Rtgh123

All pro-life people who aren’t in favor of all birth control methods being covered by insurance are possessed by the devil because they cause innocent babies to be murdered in the womb. You are demonic. A tool of the devil. It’s all a bunch of self righteous lip service, all the moral superiority while babies are being sucked out of their warm wombs as we speak.

    • Bill Love

      you are a idiot

    • Bill Love

the reason they want to shutdown planned parenthoods because of federal funding was going for abortions

  • Phil Blank

I read this story a few months ago and it may be a toss-up as to which is worse.
I’m speaking about North Carolina’s 6 brothers who molested and abused their younger 14 year old sister for almost 10 years. Even that is fresh in the news.

  • DonMega

Having babies by a methhead that’s pretty sad.

What does any of this have to do with birth control?

Some people will twist any story in order to use it as a forum to spout their personal and political beliefs.

She is a sick, drug addicted, delusional murderer, who probably had children for the sole purpose of experiencing some demented pleasure from killing them with her own hands, after they were born.

She kept her children’s bodies in her garage, like trophies. She not only wanted to kill them, but wanted to keep them around as a reminder of her horrendous actions. She had to get some type of amusement from this, or she simply would have tossed them away.

She could have had a medicine cabinet full of oral contraceptives, but I doubt she would have taken a single tablet. She did this because she got some warped satisfaction from killing her own babies, after giving birth to them.

To say this was in any way the result of the lack of availability of birth control is ridiculous!

Fact is, birth control is available in this country for free, for any woman who desires it, but cannot pay for it. This cannot be used as an excuse for her behaviors.

What type of gun was used?

You mean these deaths were not at the hands of a gun?

    Can’t be….only guns kill people.
