Body found in Lorain building identified

LORAIN — The body of a homeless man found dead in an abandoned building at 341 W. 23rd St. about 8:20 p.m. Wednesday has been identified.

John Fonseca, 56, is believed to have died from natural causes, Lorain County Coroner Stephen Evans said Thursday. Evans said there were no signs of trauma on Fonseca, whom he said was an alcoholic and diabetic.

A police report was unavailable Thursday, but Detective Sgt. Buddy Sivert said Wednesday that Fonseca was found in a second-floor abandoned apartment above the former Highland Grill, which closed in 2011.

Sivert said the man’s relatives last saw him alive Friday. The body was found by children playing in the building.
