Man charged with punching deputy

Jeffrey Shaffer

Jeffrey Shaffer

COLUMBIA STATION — Police said a man who was causing a disturbance on a four-wheeler Sunday morning later punched a sheriff’s deputy.

Jeffrey Shaffer, 25, was charged with assault on a police officer and resisting arrest about 10 a.m. Sunday after he punched a police officer in the chest, according to a report.

A Lorain County sheriff’s deputy responded to the 26100 block of Folley Road where Shaffer was riding a four-wheeler and damaging the front yard, according to police.

Shaffer told the deputy it was none of his business and acted aggressively, according to the report.

The deputy tried to talk to Shaffer, who got off the four-wheeler and asked, “You gonna arrest me? Or are you like all the other (expletives) you work with?” according to the report. Shaffer allegedly charged at the deputy and punched him in the chest, according to the report.

Shaffer was taken into custody and brought to Lorain County Jail where he was being held Sunday. He is schedule to appear in Elyria Municipal Court at 9 a.m. today.

  • d c c

he should have been given the tazer

  • golfingirl

“……and asked, “You gonna arrest me? ”

Yes Jeffrey, they are going to arrest you when you act like an idiot.

    • SelfVote

      Upvote yourself much?

      • golfingirl

        Never…….

        Change screen names much?

Or did you just sign up to ask me that?

  • fun man

the law versus you well we see who won lol

  • Bruce Tennant

did he start Sunday early or end Saturday late ?

  • Tigh Shaffer

Alcohol was not a factor. Jeffrey was serving our country in the navy and had medical problems (a major brain sugery) . This is not a substance issue. So please keep that in mind.

    • copperbill

      It is a substance problem!
      Substance of respect for authority
      Substance of respect of laws
Substance of respect for people’s property
Substance of blaming everything but yourself

      • Me

        Whatever

    • Bob

I am a Navy Vet myself.

That being said. If this wasn’t a substance issue. Then maybe you and your family might want to think about getting Jeffery on a substance that will make him less aggressive. Keep that in mind.

      • zack shaffer

Do you not think that we haven’t tried anything.if you guys don’t know what’s going on then don’t say anything. He had brain surgery obviously his head isn’t right but if you guys had Brian surgery do you think you would perfectly fine probably not.so keep that in mind.

        • Bob

Well if you have tried. Then maybe it’s time to up the dosage or get him some live in care. Some one who will be with him 24/7 before he hurts himself or some one else??

Not trying to start anything. Just looking after a follow veteran.

        • HankKwah

Well, what we DO know is that he has no respect for someone’s property and no respect for the police. Is this normal behavior? If it is, you are failing him miserably. Maybe you should have him examined and see what can be done to help him before he mouths off to the wrong person and gets himself hospitalized, shot or tazed.

        • brenda

          Praying for your family.

      • Me
    • brenda

I am praying for your brother. Always remember that through God all is possible. God bless.

  • Joe Smith

Not smart to punch a deputy and punched him in his vest where it hurts less to boot

  • mishia bailey

Here is something for you to keep in mind Bob, his family has been trying to get him some help. but as with everything related to our govt there are issues and problems that you obviously know nothing about. and as for you tomfeher how dare you call him (or anyone) dummy. His “aggression” is due to a traumatic brain injury.( im wondering if you have a reason for your ignorance.) he joined our military to protect our rights to jump on the internet and jump to conclusions. he is a good kid from a good family. by NO means a dummy. if this injury hadn’t been in Gods plans for him, this unfortunate incident would not have occurred.

    • HankKwah

I highly doubt that it’s in God’s plans for him to act like he’s completely out of control and assault police officers. If his family and friends permit this, he needs new family and friends.

      • mishia bailey

since you didn’t seem to understand what I wrote, I will try again. I meant his brain injury was in Gods plan for him. not his behavior that was CAUSED by said injury. and since you are clueless about his friends or family why would you make such a remark about what they “permit”. you know not of what you speak, therefore you really shouldn’t.

        • brenda

Stop. Just please stop. You are not going to win this. People are going by what they read, not all the facts are they even going to try to consider. My prayers go out to the young man and his family. I pray that they can find some sort of help for him. I will pass this on to my Pastor so that our church may pray for him and his family. And for you for being such a loyal friend. God bless.

        • HankKwah

The mere fact that no one was able to prevent him from acting out like this and no one restrained him when the police arrived tells me he’s out of control. It also tells me no one in his circle of family and/or friends is strong enough or concerned enough to stop him. I’ve read enough of this article to see he needs help. More help than what anyone he knows is providing. And the fact that you’re here acting the irritated member of that circle, rather than contacting someone for help, tells me you don’t know what to do. So, I’m telling YOU that YOU should obviously be OUT THERE rather than HERE if you really care about him.

          Therefore, GO DO SOMETHING!!!!

          • zack shaffer

Jeffery is my brother and he had brain surgery do you expect him to be completely normal. No. That’s your brain man. I don’t want nobody to go through what he and our family has gone/going through but I would like to see if you would be able to go through it it’s hard it’s really hard and for you guys to come on here and talk like you know what’s going on is pretty messed up on your part…we know what he did was obviously really wrong.so why come on here and bash a guy and his family on something we all was obviously really wrong and stupid. You don’t know him you never did.before his surgery he was honestly the coolest guy and just an all around a awesome guy.

          • HankKwah

You and everyone else that’s part of his circle are having a really difficult time understanding the posts here. So I’ll spell it out again: I’m sure he was a great guy but someone is failing him if they let him turf someone’s lawn and then assault a police officer. He needs help, why is there no one there for him? Why are you worried more about what is HERE than doing something to get him help? If you are, please say so, otherwise, all of your commenting on here is going to waste.

          • HC

Hank, as well all others that have voiced their harsh words, can I ask what you’re doing to help? You seem to have all the answers? You’re EXACTLY what is wrong in this world. You have no problem scrutinizing a young man and his family after reading less than 500 words about them and their situation. But yet chose to offer no help or understanding to prevent it from happening again. So I believe YOURE missing the point. There is always a story. I refuse to let you speak about something as freely as you are ,when the reason you are able to do so is because of soldiers like himself. A life saving brain surgery at the age of 22 left him to learn how to live all over again, and glitches in the government care that was promised to him in the military has left him struggling to regain. It’s incredibly sad to me that the only reason that him and his families 3 years of heartache and daily determination to get him the help he needs has only become public because a police officer was “assaulted” by a man that hasn’t walked without assistance nor cared for himself alone since 2011. I just ask that all of you that took the time to only sit back and voice your ignorance will instead spend the time to make sure our veterans get the help they deserve. But most importantly pray for this family, and especially Jeffrey.

          • HankKwah

So, you’re not one bit of help to him either, are you? Feeling guilty about that so you had to write that long, wordy “chastising” to me, right? I understand your guilt, because if YOU had been the least bit interested, or had gotten off your lazy butt, you could have prevented this. That said, you’ve failed him MORE THAN I HAVE because YOU KNEW about his situation and I’m just finding out about it via this news story. I volunteer, support and do things for the veterans, and have for the last 10 years. So, you can take your pompous attitude and blow it you-know-where. Had someone been with him, “a man that hasn’t walked without assistance nor cared for himself alone since 2011″, this wouldn’t have happened.

My question right now is, if he hasn’t walked without assistance, how the devil did he get off that four-wheeler and “charge” at the officer and punch him in the chest? And the story doesn’t mention ANYONE being there but him, and no one attempted to restrain him, either. So, instead of being here trying to alleviate your guilt, you’d be better off trying to help your buddy. I suggest you get on with it.

          • Arietta Sullivan

i see you’re still at it.. smh

          • HankKwah

Says the woman that is still clueless about everything. LOL

          • Arietta Sullivan

but knowledgeable enough to know that ‘silence is a true friend who never betrays’ ;) and everybody has business that doesn’t concern or effect my life. for someone like you, who has an opinion for everything knows nothing at all. HAVE A BLESS DAY *kisses*

          • HankKwah

            silence is a true friend who never betrays’ ;

You should take that advice. And you are completely clueless if you think I comment on everything. I don’t have the time that you have.

          • Arietta Sullivan

i enjoy my time too :)

  • brenda

I did not know that there was such a large amount of ignorance in the world. No not calling names, but how can so many people be so, uhhh what’s the word, ignorant to what someone is trying to say to you. Its clear that this young man has a medical problems and drugs don’t always fix what’s broken. What you need to be doing is praying that God can help this young man’s doctors to be able to help him. N throw your own name in there while you’re at it!

    • makingadifference

I agree with you Brenda that there are several ignorant people who bash every bad story this paper publishes. Every day I do read what kind of comments are made by some negative “regular” commentators on here and guess these people have nothing better to do in life than make rude and nasty comments. Sometimes on a daily basis but I guess that is your right! Please keep in mind, there are always two sides to every story that family members do read your comments as well and your nasty comments are hurtful for people to read especially when they do know the other half of the story. It’s funny how this specific paper consistently fails in attempt seek and report any information about the person they are reporting on because it came from a police report. I personally have know Jeffrey and his family for years and when I saw this story knowing what this kid has been through, I immediately knew that it was not in his character to ever do something like this had this been a “normal” circumstance. Jeffrey is a young man who was excited to go serve in the Navy and unfortunately had his career end due to a medical problem that were not an act of war. This guy has been through a lot of rehabilitation and physical therapy since his surgery. I pray that he and his family gets through this ordeal too. As for the Sheriff Deputy, I realize he was only doing his job and risk their life every day. I am sure if the deputy knew the situation and knew Jeffrey, it would have been handled much differently. The next time people feel the need to post negative and rude comments and any of these stories, keep in mind you might be hurting people who read your hurtful words. If you can’t post something positive, don’t post anything because it does make you look very ignorant,

    • Bob

You want to be mad and call someone ignorant. Talk to the person who was’t watching over this guy. That is the person who dropped the ball and let this guy get arrested.

And Before you start saying I do not know what I am talking. I (as a single parent) have to deal with my autistic son everyday. So I have a good idea what they people are going through.

  • Thomas Calkins

My sister had brain surgery to remove a tumor and she acted abnormally for at least a year. It has been 5 years now and at times she still doesn’t make good decisions. Meds do not always help and can make things worse. Prayers are going out for this veteran right now!

  • Thomas Calkins

And I understand why the Chronicle had there comment system down for so long. I get the feeling it will be down again due to the mean spirited trash talk that goes on between commentators. Be part of the solution, not the problem.

    • Joe Smith

Free speech should not be limited to just the fluffy bunny type comments or it would not be free speech would it.

      • Thomas Calkins

While i agree with you in principle, Free speech should be used responsibly, not to argue (often off topic).

        • Joe Smith

Not to argue either, but free speech should be used in any way a person wants to as long as it is within the law ( Slander, yelling fire in a theater etc.)
Hence the “free” portion of free speech. What one persons thinks is responsible differs from what others think is responsible.
Be safe dude and I hope your sister is doing good now.

  • Arietta Sullivan

i,constantly, see the same commentators, just about, every day. ‘ by giving us the opinions of the uneducated , journalism keeps us in touch with the ignorance of the community’ Oscar Wilde

    • HankKwah

I see you still don’t understand how to write a coherent sentence yet, either. You’ve got enough unnecessary punctuation for an entire 4th grade English class.

      • Arietta Sullivan

why thank you..i take that as a compliment,my love :) ;) your judgement call ONLY tells me that you’re still a pathetic piece of turd who doesn’t respect other humans&values other opinions. i’m sorry that you were picked on by bullies, for whatever reason, when you were younger but no need to keep the cycle going. you can go on,if you want,i just know i’m the better person to laugh&walk away ;) we are not all mean to you even the 1s that are dummies.it’s ok,i’ll pray for you. <3 oh&didn't i read, some where, that you volunteer to help the veterans out?? smh YOU'RE INSULTS IS NOT THE FREEDOM THEY ALL FOUGHT&DIED FOR..have a bless day again *kisses*

        • HankKwah

Trust me when whatever you may have to say means less than nothing to me. I consider the source, the intelligence of the source and guess what? You rate a huge ZERO in both categories and that’s what your “insults” mean to me. Maybe if YOU got the stick out of YOUR rear end, you’d be a happier person, one whom the rest of us could tolerate.

      • Arietta Sullivan

and yes i saw the grammer mistakes,my English teCHER..guess what?? i’m on a blog&still DON’T CARE. get the stick out of your rear end&try to be nicer to people, you would be amazed on how much you would enjoy life more

  • Scout

So once again the whole story wasn’t reported ergo everyone posts negative comments. I’m guessing if people knew the whole background on this young man they wouldn’t be so snipey. My hope is that this young man gets the medical attention that he needs and hopefully recovers.

  • caringword

My prayers go out for this whole family and for Jeffrey he is and will always be a wonderful person. His family has stretched every length of resources and care to help he recover from this terrible injury! Perhaps those who are so full of negative comments and critism and has all the time in the world to endulge in giving some uneducated expert opinions should spend their time more effective by doing some research on extensive brain injury and the road to recovery. This family has done everything in their power to help their veteran son and will continue to do so. People please take the time to understand that you do not know nor understand each piece to the puzzle by reading a news report. Their are so many people out there suffering for things out of their control. BE HUMAN or get a new hobbie

  • Labrone

They should of shot him and then when he put his hands up to surrender, shot him six more times and then lie about what happen

  • Arietta Sullivan

i love you too.. kisses&i won’t go away until i’m dead so sorry for your luck right now. i’m not seeing what i’m doing so wrong except spreading the love. it’s ok to have someone love you ;)

  • HankKwah

Yea, my luck has been pretty bad, so I’m not surprised.

  • Arietta Sullivan

Sorry to hear that but chin up..my smiling face will always be around to help you smile :) kisses
