John D. Wright, 78, and a resident of Amherst, passed away Sunday, July 27, 2014 at Amherst Manor Nursing Home following a lengthy illness. He was born April 19, 1936 in Chester,West Virginia. John had made his home in Amherst since 1972.
He proudly served in the United States Air Force where he trained as an air traffic controller and also became an instructor. While in the Air Force he was stationed in the Philippines. He was employed as an air traffic controller at the Cleveland Center in Oberlin. John was then employed at Madison Development Company as a project manager. He coached recreational softball and baseball in South Amherst for over 20 years. John loved spending time with his family, especially Sunday dinners, and attending his grandchildren’s ball games.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years Margaret Wright (nee Harris); his sons and their wives, Eugene and Susan Wright of South Amherst, James and Angel Wright of Amherst; his grandchildren, Erin (Luis) Patten, Ashlee (James) Hammond, Jonathan Wright, Jessica Wright and Jacob Wright; his great grandchildren Madison Hammond and J.J. Hammond; his brother and his wife, Robert and Linda Wright of Elliott, Maine; and his sister and her husband, Patricia and Thomas Kennedy of Lakeland, Florida; and his Dachshund, Lucy.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John Davis and Marie Elizabeth Wright (nee Casto).
Friends may call Tuesday, July 29, 2014 from 5 to 8 P.M. at the Hempel Funeral Home, 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, July 30 at 11 A.M. at the funeral home. The Rev. James Cooper, pastor of Vermilion Habourtown Community Church, will officiate. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery, South Amherst.
